Baseball Explodes for 17 Runs in Second Game of Doubleheader At Regis

Pack Sweeps Doubleheader Against Rangers, Moves to 10-14 Overall and 2-5 in RMAC

DENVER, Colo. — Behind a relentless offensive outburst that produced 17 runs on 17 hits, Colorado State University Pueblo baseball surged past Regis, 17-10, in the second game of a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Regis Baseball Field.

The ThunderWolves, who won the first game of the doubleheader 10-3, improved to 10-14 overall and 2-5 in the league, while Regis fell to 10-18-1 overall and 1-9-1 in the RMAC. The Pack will look to win the series on Sunday, March 22, as the two teams play a single nine-inning game beginning at noon.

In Saturday's second game of the twin bill, the Pack broke the game open early with a dominant second inning, plating eight runs on nine hits to take control. CSU Pueblo sent 12 batters to the plate in the frame, highlighted by RBI hits from redshirt senior shortstop Kyle Miller (Pueblo, Colo./Colorado Mesa), junior catcher JJ Fontana (Fort Collins, Colo./Poudre), senior centerfielder Jeremiah Sanchez (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo West), sophomore first baseman Tyler Clementz (Gilbert, Ariz./Basha), and senior designated hitter George Andrews (Overland Park, Kan./Coffeyville CC) and a two-run double from sophomore rightfielder Dax Howard (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest).

Despite Regis responding with five runs in the bottom half of the inning, the Pack maintained offensive pressure throughout the game, adding runs in four different innings to sweep the doubleheader from the Rangers.

Howard led the charge at the plate, going 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored, while senior second baseman Devean Alvarez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Chaffey College) added three hits and three RBI. Fontana also drove in three runs as part of a three-hit performance with three runs scored, and Sanchez reached base three times with two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases.

The Pack extended its lead in the fourth on a two-run single from Fontana before Alvarez delivered a two-run double in the fifth to push the advantage to 12-7. The ThunderWolves then put the game out of reach in the sixth, scoring four runs, including a two-run single from Howard.

On the mound, senior Cole Bloomer (Parker, Colo./Lamar CC) improved to 2-0 on the season as he earned the win in relief, tossing 3.2 innings while allowing three runs, striking out two, and walking none. He stabilized the game after Regis' early rally and helped preserve the lead.

Regis, who finished with 16 hits, was paced by Bobo Iandoli, who drove in four runs, while Ethan Wood had three hits. Five Rangers collected two hits in the loss.

Gio Casas (0-2) took loss on the mound for Regis as he tossed 1.2 innings and allowed six hits and seven runs (seven earned), while walking one and striking out none.

Both teams turned a double play and stranded a combined 18 runners on base as the Pack left eight on base and Regis stranded 10 runners.

Regis committed two errors, and the Pack had one error in the game. The Pack also had four stolen bases in the game.
