Men's Basketball Posts First Win Over Mines Since 2018, Collects 63-54 Home Victory Over Orediggers

Victory Was Pack's First Over Mines Since Jan. 20, 2018

PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo snapped an 11-game losing skid here Thursday evening to Colorado School of Mines as the ThunderWolves used a strong second half to secure a 63-54 win over the Orediggers in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at Massari Arena.

The win was the first for Pack over Mines since collecting an 83-79 victory in Golden, Colo., on Jan. 20, 2018, a span of 2,917 days or seven years, 11 months, and 26 days. The Pack leads the all-time series 36-34.

With the victory, the Pack extended its win streak to four straight games and improved to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in the RMAC, while Mines fell to 8-10 overall and 4-3 in the league. The win moved the Pack into fourth place in the league standings.

The Pack's balanced offense saw four players score in double figures as freshman guard Bryce Riehl (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mesa Ridge) tallied a career-high 13 points, while redshirt sophomore forward Ty Adam (Severance, Colo./Severance) and junior forward Kyren Allen (Commerce City, Colo./Trinidad State) each scored 12 points and sophomore guard/forward Jordan Blair (Keller, Texas/Keller Central) had 10 points and eight rebounds to help the Pack improve to 7-2 at home this season.

After Mines opened the game by scoring the first six points in the first 71 seconds, before the Pack responded with an 18-0 run over the next nine-plus minutes to take an 18-6 lead. The run began with a trey from Adam and was capped by a hook shot from redshirt sophomore guard Corbin Garver (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy).

The Orediggers, though, answered right back with a 16-5 run to cut the Pack's lead to 23-22 with 2:41 left in the opening half. Mines' run was keyed by 10 points from Alex Romack, who finished the game with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds.

After a three-point play by Romack brought the Orediggers within 23-22, Blair pushed the Pack's lead out to 25-22 following a lay-up with 2:23 left, but Shelton Henton scored a basket with 34 seconds left to cut the Pack's lead to 25-24 at the half.

In the second half, the Pack asserted control over the final 20 minutes as they shot 51.9 percent from the field after halftime, as they outscored the Orediggers, 38-30, to post the victory and remain undefeated in the 2026 calendar year.

Mines opened the second half on a 9-5 run to take a 35-30 lead just four minutes into the half. The Pack, though, responded with a 5-0 run capped by an alley-oop dunk by Allen to tie the game at 35 with 13:02 remaining. Allen scored eight of his 12 points after halftime.

After the two teams traded back-to-back treys to tie the game at 38, the Pack used a 10-6 run capped by back-to-back baskets by Adam to push out to a 48-44 lead with 7:49 remaining.

The Orediggers had one more push left as they used a 5-2 run over the next three-plus minutes to pull within 50-49 with 4:15 remaining.

CSU Pueblo closed the game on a 13-5 run over the final three-plus minutes to cap the scoring, including Riehl drilling a trey with 1:05 left to give the Pack a 57-51 lead and then hitting two free throws with 44 seconds left to push the Pack lead to 59-51.

In addition to Romack, who was 9-for-11 from the field, the Pack defense limited the rest of the Orediggers to 11-for-41 from the field as Mines finished the game shooting 38.5 percent from the field. The Orediggers were also 6-for-25 (24 percent) from the 3-point line.

Along with Romack's 23 points, Helton added eight points, and Jonathan Moore chipped in with six points in the loss.

The Pack finished the game shooting 47.2 percent from the field and 35 percent (6-for-17) from the 3-point line.

CSU Pueblo forced Mines into 14 turnovers, which led to 17 points, and had a 15-5 edge in fast-break points. The Pack also held a 34-24 advantage in points in the paint. The Pack had 11 turnovers that led to 10 points for Mines.

The Pack also held a 32-29 advantage on the boards, dished out 16 assists on 25 made baskets with redshirt junior guard Jaden Kennis (Windsor, Colo./MSU Denver) dishing out five assists and added five rebounds and two steals, and the Pack blocked six shots. Mines had 11 assists on 20 made baskets.

Both teams were strong at the free-throw line as Mines was a perfect 8-for-8 at the line, while the Pack was 7-for-10 from the line.

The Pack will conclude its three-game home stand on Saturday, Jan. 17, as it hosts Regis (1-12 overall, 0-7 RMAC) for a 3 p.m. game on Home of Heroes Day, honoring active military members and veterans. Regis dropped their ninth-straight game on Thursday night with their 93-74 loss on Thursday at UCCS.
