Women's Tennis Concludes Fall Homestand With Setbacks to Fort Hays State, Colorado College

Pack Won a Total of 86 Games in Saturday's Two Dual Matches

PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's tennis closed out its fall home schedule here Saturday afternoon by dropping back-to-back matches to Fort Hays State and Colorado College at the Pueblo City Park Tennis Center.

The ThunderWolves (0-3) started Saturday's action with a 6-1 setback to Fort Hays State, before falling 7-0 to Colorado College.

Saturday's two matches followed Friday's home opener against Colorado Mesa as the Mavericks collected a 7-0 win.

FORT HAYS STATE 6, CSU PUEBLO 0
Despite the score, the match against Fort Hays State was competitive as the Pack won a total of 49 games over nine matches, including forcing a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles and freshman Ainoha Salo (Barcelona, Spain/Escola Lleo XIII) picking up a straight sets win at No. 5 singles as she defeated Janae Montoya, 6-2, 6-3.

The Tigers (1-1) opened the match by winning all three doubles matches, but the Pack made them work for that third win at No. 1 doubles after collecting wins of 6-1 at No. 2 doubles over seniors Bella Hernandez (Rocklin, Calif./MSU Denver) and Laney Reddick (Sacramento, Calif./MSU Denver) and 6-3 at No. 3 doubles over Salo and junior Yelena Travica (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Maples Collegiate).

In No. 1 doubles, senior Margot Aebischer (Estupes, Spain/Eastern Arizona College) and freshman Fernanda Martinez (Queretaro, Mexico/International School of Queretaro) trailed 3-0 to Montoya and Molly Gaddis, before winning six of the next nine games to force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, the FHSU duo would prevail, 7-3 to collect the 7-6 win.

Following doubles, the teams played singles and in singles play, the Pack won 36 games over six matches, with Salo winning 12 of those games thanks to her win at No. 5 singles over Montoya.

FHSU would take a 2-0 lead in the match following Ines Latorre's 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles over Reddick, and then earned its third win with a Gaddis' win at No. 2 singles over Martinez (6-2, 6-4).

The Tigers would seal the match victory with Bethan Gill's win at No. 3 singles over Hernandez, 6-4, 6-3.

Salo, though, would prevent a Tigers sweep with her win at No. 5 singles.

FHSU would close out the match with wins at No. 6 and No. 1 singles, but not without a fight by the Pack as Travica won six games over Aggeliki Efthomiou at No. 6 singles (6-3, 6-3) and Aebischer took five games over Yone Pereiro at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-3).

In Saturday's second match of the day, the Pack and the Tigers played another competitive match as the Pack won a total of 37 games over nine matches, including Salo forcing a third set at No. 4 singles after winning the first set 6-1 over Kala Komanduri. In addition, all three doubles matches finished with the same scores – 6-3.

The teams began with doubles as CC (2-0) would win all three matches by identical 6-3 scores to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Pack won nine of the 18 doubles games that were played.

With CC holding a 1-0 lead after doubles, the teams turned their focus to singles as the Tigers earned their second point thanks to Avery Hickman earning a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over Martinez.

The Tigers pushed its lead to 3-0 in the match following Ally Lowe's 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over Aebischer, while earning its fourth win at No. 5 singles as Lindsay Popeo earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Reddick.

Martinez, who played No. 1 singles against CC, took five games off of Aspen Young as Young won, 6-2, 6-3 to give the Tigers their fifth singles win, and Meredith Waters collected a 6-2, 6-2 win at Travica for their sixth singles win.

But perhaps the best match of the afternoon came at No. 4 singles between Salo and Komanduri. Salo jumped out to a strong start as she won the first game, 6-1, but Komanduri rallied to earn a 6-1 win in the second set to set up a third-set tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, both teams traded points, but Komanduri would ultimately prevail in the tiebreaker, 10-5.

The Pack will close out its fall season on Sept. 25-27 as they travel to Arlington, Texas, to compete in the ITA South Central Regional Championships.
