Women's Tennnis Celebrates Senior Day With Shutout Win Over Northern New Mexico

PUEBLO, Colo. - Colorado State University Pueblo women's tennis celebrated Senior Day here Monday with a 6-0 victory over Northern New Mexico College at the Pueblo City Park Tennis Courts. 

With the win, the ThunderWolves improve to 2-10 on the season, while Northern New Mexico falls to 0-3 on the season.

Prior to Monday's match, the Pack honored its two seniors in a prematch ceremony. This year's seniors are Marta Garcia (Alcala de Hernares, Spain/Cardinal Stritch) and Malaya Pendon (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo East). 

In Monday's match, which took about 75 minutes to complete, was dominated by the Pack as they lost just one game among the six matches that were contested and that one game came at No. 2 doubles. 

Monday's match began with doubles as NNMC had only four players available for the match, while the Pack had five players available. 

In doubles, the Pack's No. 1 team of Garcia and junior Margot Aebischer (Etupes, France/Eastern Arizona College) got things started as they won 6-0 over Miranda Salazar and Ethena Silva. Aebischer and Garcia improved to 1-1 on the season with the win. 

The Pack then sealed the doubles point with a 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot by Pendon and sophomore Yelena Travica (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Maples Collegiate) over Shaela Carrillo and Lorianne Bueno. Pendon and Travica are now 1-1 this season in doubles. 

Following the completion of doubles, the teams turned their attention to singles. 

Before singles play began, the Pack picked up a win by default at the No. 5 spot to take a 2-0 lead in the match. 

The Pack's next singles win came at the No. 4 spot as Pendon won 6-6, 6-0 over Carrillo to take a 3-0 lead. 

Aebischer gave the Pack a 4-0 lead in the match with her 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot over Silva. Aebischer improved to 3-2 at No. 2 singles this season and 3-7 overall on the year. 

Garcia won the Pack's fifth point of the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 1 spot over Salazar. Garcia is now 5-7 on the season in singles. 

The Pack sealed the 6-0 win following Travica's win at the No. 3 spot as she defeated Bueno in straight sets (6-0, 6-0). Travica is now 3-7 on the season in singles, including 1-1 at the No. 3 spot. 

CSU Pueblo will return to action this coming Saturday, April 12 as they travel to Denver, Colo., for an 11 a.m. match against MSU Denver and then travels to Colorado Springs, Colo., later in the day on Saturday with a 4 p.m. match against Colorado College.
