PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's tennis team concluded its road schedule on Saturday as they fell 7-0 at MSU Denver and 7-0 at Colorado College.
With the two setbacks, the ThunderWolves dropped its record to 2-11 on the season, while MSU Denver improved to 12-12 and Colorado College moved to 8-7 on the year.
The Pack will close out its 2024-25 season with a 9:30 a.m. match on Sunday, April 13 against Colorado Mesa at the Pueblo City Park Tennis Courts.
MSU Denver 7, CSU Pueblo 0
Against the Roadrunners at the Assembly Athletic Complex, the Pack won a total of 14 games across the seven matches that were played.
The two teams began with doubles and in doubles, MSU Denver won all three matches to earn the doubles point as the No. 1 team of junior
Margot Aebischer (Etupes, France/Eastern Arizona College) and senior
Marta Garcia (Alcala de Hernares, Spain/Cardinal Stritch) fell 6-2 to Hanna Haber and Louise Hosking, while the No. 2 team of sophomore
Yelena Travica (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Maples Collegiate) and senior
Malaya Pendon (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo East) fell 6-1 to Kim Heddes and Kambra Roles.
After doubles play was concluded, the teams turned their focus to singles, and in singles, the Roadrunners won at No. 1 and No. 5 by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores and won by default at No. 6 singles to seal the match win.
Garcia was able to take three games at the No. 2 spot as she fell 6-2, 6-1 to Heddes, while Pendon took four games at the No. 4 spot as she fell 6-2, 6-2 to Monica Guarin and Travica also took four games off of Victoria Ricautre at No. 3 spot as she fell 6-3, 6-1.
Colorado College 7, CSU Pueblo 0
About four hours after the completion of the match at MSU Denver, the Pack returned to the court in Colorado Springs as the Pack faced Colorado College at Memorial Park.
In the match against Colorado College, the Pack won a total of 15 games across the seven matches that were held.
CC was able to come away with the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match. In doubles, Travica and Pendon fell 6-0 to Kala Komanduri and Amelia Karr at the No. 2 spot, while Aebischer and Garcia fell 6-3 at the No. 1 spot to Lucia Moraveck and Aspen Young.
Meanwhile, in singles play, CC took a 2-0 lead in the match with a win at the No. 6 spot by default and took a 3-0 lead with Moravek's 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 spot over Pendon.
CC would earn the match win with Avery Hickman's 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot over Travica.
Freshman
MaKayla Martinez (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo County) fell 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot to Abby Wilson to give CC a 5-0 lead in the match.
The two most competitive singles matches came at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots as Garcia and Allyson Lowe battled at No. 1 and Aebischer and Young battled at No. 2.
At the No. 1 spot, Lowe jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first set, before Garcia would win the third game to pull within 2-1. Lowe, though, would close the first set by winning the final four games to take a 6-1 win. In the second, Lowe jumped out to a 4-0 lead, before Garcia won three straight games to pull within 4-3. Lowe would battle back to win the final two games to seal her 6-3 victory.
Young would open her match at No. 2 singles by winning the opening set, 6-0, before Aebischer rallied in the second game as she trailed 3-1 early on, before winning two straight games to tie the set at 3-3. Young, though, won the next two games to hold a 5-3 lead, before Aebischer battled back and won the next two games to force another tie at 5-all. With the second set tied, Young would win the final two games to seal her 7-5 set win.
