GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Colorado State University Pueblo women's tennis returned to action for the first time in 20 days here Saturday as the ThunderWolves fell 9-0 to Colorado Mesa at Elliott Tennis Center.
With the loss, the Pack falls to 1-9 overall, while Colorado Mesa improves to 13-9 on the year. The Pack will return to home on Monday, April 7 with a 10 a.m. Senior Day match against Northern Mexico College.
Prior to Monday's match, the Pack will honor its three seniors -
Valentina Brienza (Rionero in Vulture, Italy/University of District Columbia),
Marta Garcia (Alcala de Hernares, Spain/Cardinal Stritch) and
Malaya Pendon (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo East).
In Saturday's match against the Mavericks, the Pack played without its usual No. 2 singles player, Brienza, so that forced the Pack to play with five players.
The match began with doubles and the Mavs earned a win at No. 3 doubles by default and then clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot. Pendon and sophomore
Yelena Travica (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Maples Collegiate) fell 6-2 at the No. 2 doubles spot to CMU's duo of Makenna Livingston and Audrey O'Rear.
Following doubles action, the teams turned their attention to singles play. In singles action, the Pack won a total of 10 games across the five matches that were played as CMU earned a win at No. 6 singles by default.
The Mavs picked up its second win in singles at the No. 4 spot as Pendon fell 6-0, 6-1 to Delia Maier to take a 3-0 lead in the match.
Travica would fall 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot to Jade Brilhante to take a 4-0 lead match in the series.
Garcia and Devyn Rodriguez would battle at the No. 2 singles spot as Rodriguez would win 6-1, 6-0 to give the Mavs a 5-0 lead in the match.
At the No. 5 singles spot, freshman
MaKayla Martinez (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo County) faced Catalina Ballon Marin. Martin would win the first set, 6-1 and also took the second set, 6-2 to give CMU its sixth point of the match.
The final match to finish on Saturday came at the No. 1 spot as junior
Margot Aebischer faced Livingston. In the first set, Aebischer and Livingston played a back-and-forth set as Livingston would the set, 6-4 and posted a 6-0 win in the second set.
