PUEBLO, Colo. - Colorado State University Pueblo Baseball opened Friday's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader with a 13-3 setback to the Roadrunners at Rawlings Field.
The second game of Friday's doubleheader was suspended in the bottom of the first inning with MSU Denver leading 4-3. That game will be resumed on Saturday, April 19 at 2 p.m. to complete the four game series.
With the setback in Friday's first game, the ThunderWolves fall to 24-17 overall and 14-9 in the RMAC, while MSU Denver improved to 25-16 overall and 17-6 in the league.
In Friday's doubleheader opener, the Pack led 2-1 going to the top of the third, before MSU Denver scored 12 unanswered runs to post the come-from-behind win and take a 2-1 lead in the series.Â
After watching the teams combine for 55 runs and 70 hits in splitting a doubleheader on Thursday, Friday's opening game featured 21 hits and 16 runs, including 13 runs and 16 hits by MSU Denver, while the Pack finished with six hits and three runs. Six of MSU Denver's 16 hit went for extra bases.Â
Following a two-out double in the bottom of the third inning by sophomore center fielder
Logan Kelly (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Capistrano Valley Christian), the Roadrunners retired the final 19 Pack hitters in the row, including recording 10 of those outs on strikeouts with five of those being called third strikes.Â
Kelly was one of six Pack players to record a hit in the game.Â
The Pack put two of its first three hitters on base in the bottom of the first thanks to walks and after a steal of third by senior designated hitter
Wyatt Reginato (Cottonwood, Calif./Folsom Lake), senior right fielder
Elijah Borjas (Denver, Colo./Lakewood) brought the first run of the game on his RBI single through the left side off of MSU Denver hurler Brad Helton.Â
MSU Denver's Cam Yuran led off the top of the second with a triple and then senior hurler
Travis Farrell (Las Vegas, Nev./Otero JC) walked the next two hitters to load the bases with no outs, the Roadrunners would tie the game on a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of Brooks Rasmussen, but Farrell prevented further damage by striking out Brody Brown to end the inning with two MSU Denver runners on base.Â
The Pack retook the lead in the bottom of the second thanks to four hits and three wild pitches by Helton to move in front 3-1. The first run came home on an RBI double by freshman left fielder
Noah Williams (Carson, Calif./Redondo Union), while the second run came home on an RBI single by Reginato.Â
MSUD retook the lead in the top of the third thanks to a 2-run double down the left field line by Andrew Graham and an RBI double to right by Easton Amundson.Â
The Roadrunners scored five runs on four hits, a balk by Farrell and a walk in the top of the fourth inning to push its lead to 9-3. The big hits in the inning were RBI singles by Andrew Biddle and Yuran and a 3-run homer over the wall in left center by Graham. The single by Yuran chased Farrell, who tossed 3.2 innings and allowed seven hits and eight runs, while walking three and striking out four in taking the loss and dropping his record to 7-2 on the season.
MSUD added three more runs to its lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI double to left by Yuran, and RBI singles by Amundson and Drew Rasmussen off of redshirt junior reliever
Cole Bloomer (Arapahoe, Colo./Lamar CC), who replaced Farrell on the mound, to take a 12-3 lead.
The Roadrunners added another run to its tally in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Jesse Velders to take a 13-3 lead.Â
Bloomer, who ate up some innings to help the Pack bullpen after Farrell went just 3.2 innings, tossed 3.1 innings and allowed eight hits and five runs (five earned), while striking out three and walking two.Â
Biddle, Yuran and Graham each had three hits in the game as those three players went a combined 9-for-15 with nine runs scored and eight RBI, including five RBI from Graham. Rasmussen also had three hits and 2 RBI, while Amundson added two hits and 2 RBI in the win.Â
Helton (3-3), who retired the final seven Pack hitters he faced, picked up the win as he tossed five innings and allowed six hits and three runs, while walking two and fanning seven. Haydn Benoit earned his first save as he tossed four perfect innings, while striking out seven and walking none. He retired all 12 batters he faced in order, including striking out the side in both the eighth and ninth innings to end the game.Â
For the game, the Pack left five runners on base and committed an error, while MSU Denver left nine runners on base. Both teams also had a stolen base in the game.Â
