PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's tennis concluded its 2024-25 season here Sunday with a 7-0 setback to Colorado Mesa at the Pueblo City Park Tennis Complex.
With the setback, the ThunderWolves completed the season with a 2-12 overall record, while CMU improved to 15-11. The two wins this season are the most for the Pack women's tennis program since going 4-21 during the 2017-18. The Pack had gone winless in a season from 2018-19 through 2023-24.
Sunday's match also marked the final collegiate tennis match for the Pack's two seniors –
Marta Garcia (Alcala de Hernares, Spain/Cardinal Stritch) and
Malaya Pendon (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo East).
In Sunday's finale, the Pack, who is coached by
Chris Roman, made the Mavericks work for their wins as they won a total of 14 games, including the No. 1 doubles team of Garcia and junior
Margot Aebischer (Etupes, France/Eastern Arizona College), winning five games against CMU's duo of Devyn Rodriguez and Jade Brilhante.
The match began with doubles on Sunday as CMU earned the doubles point thanks to their wins at the No. 3 and No. 2 spot. At No. 1, CMU was able to hang on for a 7-5 victory over Aebischer and Garcia.
After the completion of doubles, the teams turned their focus to singles action.
CMU went up 2-0 in the match with a win by default at the No. 6 spot, before Delia Maier earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 4 spot over Pendon to take a 3-0 lead in the match.
The Mavericks picked up their fourth win at the No. 5 spot as Catalina Ballon Marin earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over freshman
MaKayla Martinez (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo County).
Sophomore
Yelena Travica (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Maples Collegiate) fell in straight sets to Brilhante at the No. 3 spot to give the Mavs a 5-0 lead in the match.
Aebischer and Rodriguez battled at the No. 2 spot as Rodriguez would pick up a 6-4, 6-0 win to give the Mavs a 6-0 lead in the match.
The final match in singles was at the No. 1 spot as Garcia and Livingston went head-to-head. Livingston won the first set, 6-2, and then picked up a 6-1 win in the second set.
