Softball drops pair at MSU Denver

DENVER, Colo. (April 11, 2025) - The Colorado State University Pueblo softball team dropped the first two games of a four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) series at MSU Denver, falling 2-1 in the opener and fell in the nightcap 11-3 (5 inn.) at Assembly Athletic Complex.

With the two losses, CSU Pueblo drops to 24-17 overall and 23-11 in conference play, while MSU Denver improves to 33-9 overall and 28-5 in conference.

Game One Recap
MSU Denver edged out the ThunderWolves in a nail-biting pitcher's dual to open the doubleheader. Both teams struck early in the in the first inning, with the ThunderWolves getting on the board via an RBI-groundout from Caitlyn Cole (Jr., Merced, Calif.) after a miscue in the infield. The Roadrunners responded with a run-scoring single in their half.

After the early action, pitching took center stage. The Pack's McKenna James (Jr., Windsor, Colo.) was sharp and gave up two runs-only one earned-while striking out four in six innings. MSU Denver's Natalie Romero delivered a stellar complete-game performance, scattering just two hits over seven innings and allowing one unearned run to earn her 15th win of the season. 

The decisive blow came in the fifth, when MSU Denver's Alexia Boring drove in Lexi Gephart with a single to right. The Roadrunners' defense held strong late, surviving a seventh-inning scare after an error put the tying run on base.

James drops to 12-8 on the season.

Game Two Recap
The Roadrunners' offense exploded in the second game, pounding out 11 hits and capitalizing on a massive fifth inning to secure a run-rule victory.

After CSU Pueblo took a brief 1-0 lead in the first on a Caitlyn Cole RBI-single, the Roadrunners responded with a five-run second inning highlighted by Hannah Difabio's two-run double and Miki Berg's two-RBI double.

Madelyn Huerta (Jr., Azusa, Calif.) blasted her sixth home run of the season in the fourth inning for the Pack.

Jenna Medhus starred at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a triple and a towering three-run homer in the fifth. Medhus finished with three RBIs and three runs scored. Difabio also added a pair of hits and two RBIs.

On the mound, Mia Sanchez (Fr., Los Angeles, Calif.) lasted 4.2 innings and gave up nine runs on 10 hits and allowed five walks with two strikeouts. Lucy Carney (Sr., Lakewood, Colo.) came on to pitch in relief and gave up one run and a hit.

Cheyenne Prieto was efficient, tossing a complete-game five-hitter with three strikeouts and no walks to improve to 10-2 on the season.

On Deck
The ThunderWolves and Roadrunners will finish the series on Saturday with two more games starting at 11 a.m. at Assembly Athletic Complex.
