LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo Baseball completed a four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference sweep here Saturday afternoon over Colorado Christian after earning a 15-3 win in the second game of a doubleheader at All-Star Park.
With the victory, the ThunderWolves improved its record to 17-13 overall and 7-5 in the RMAC, while Colorado Christian fell to 6-27 overall and 3-13 in the league. The Pack moved into fourth place in the league standings following Saturday's two wins.
After tallying 16 runs and 22 hits in sweeping Friday's doubleheader, the Pack offense tallied 31 runs and 32 hits in sweeping Saturday's doubleheader against the Cougars.
In Saturday's second game of the doubleheader, the Pack offense finished with 16 hits, including three doubles and two home runs. The Pack also had four stolen bases and drew seven walks.
Senior third baseman
Joseph Quintana (Golden, Colo./Erskine) was the big offensive star in the nightcap of the twin bill as he was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. In addition to Quintana, freshman center fiielder
Noah Williams (Carson, Calif./Redondo Union), fifth-year senior first baseman
Christian Castaneda (El Paso, Texas/Otero JC), junior second baseman Devan Alvarez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Chaffey College) and senior catcher
Brady Ingalls (Parker, Colo../Ponderosa) each had two hits. Williams, Ingalls, and Castaneda combined to score seven runs, including Williams scoring three times.
The Pack jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to two hits, two walks, four stolen bases, and a wild pitch. The first run came home on a sacrifice fly to center by senior left fielder
Wyatt Reginato (Cottonwood, Calif./Folsom Lake), and two batters later with two runners on base, junior designated hitter
George Andrews (Overland Park, Kan./Coffeyville CC) drilled a 2-run double down the right field line to clear the bases.
CCU answered right back in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a 3-run homer by Major Maydon off of junior hurler
Jacob Petersheim (Broadway, Va./Broadway), who was making his second straight start. Three of the five hits Petersheim allowed came in the first inning.
In the top of the second, the Pack loaded the bases with a walk and back-to-back singles by Quintana and Williams with no outs and after Zachary Hill stuck out the next two Pack hitters, Castaneda began a new hit streak as he hit a 2-run single to left center and senior right fielder
Elijah Borjas (Denver, Colo.) followed with a 3-run homer over the fence in left to give the Pack an 8-3 lead. Castaneda had his 30-game hit streak dating to last season snapped in Saturday's first game as he was 0-for-3 with a run scored in the opener.
The Pack extended its lead to 14-3 in the top of the fourth inning as it used four hits and scored six runs. The scoring in the frame started on an RBI double by, two batters later, Quintana added another RBI double, and after Williams walked, senior shortstop
Rob Mansour (La Verne, Calif./Cuesta College) recorded a 2-run single and then the next batter, Reginato brought out the fifth run on a ground out, and Castaneda followed with another ground out.
Quintana gave the Pack a 15-3 lead as he led off the top of the sixth inning with a home run over the left field wall.
Along with an offense that recorded 16 hits, Petersheim and two relievers ended the game retiring 14 of the final 15 CCU batters they faced as Petersheim retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced, while junior
Jake Olguin-Pacheco (Denver, Colo./Horizon) pitched the sixth inning and retired all three hitters he faced in nine pitches and then freshman
Frank Flores (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) pitched the seventh inning and retired all three CCU hitters he faced in seven pitches.
Petersheim (2-1) picked up the win as he tossed five innings and allowed five hits and three runs (two earned runs) while striking out two and walking none. Olguin-Pacheco and Flores each recorded a strikeout.
Connor Laeng paced the Cougars with two hits, while Maydon had 3 RBI thanks to his 3-run homer in the first inning.
For the game, the Pack stranded nine runners on base and committed an error, while CCU left two runners on base and committed two errors. Both teams also turned a double play in the game.
The Pack, who has now won four straight games and seven of its last 10 games overall, will return home to Rawlings Field for a four-game RMAC series next weekend (April 4-6) against Colorado School of Mines (10-23 overall, 5-11 RMAC). The series will begin with a nine-inning game on Friday, April 4 at 3 p.m., before playing a doubleheader on Saturday, April 5 beginning at noon and then concluding the series with a single game on Sunday, April 6 at noon.
