PUEBLO, Colo. - Colorado State University Pueblo and Regis combined for 63 runs, 67 hits, 13 home runs and 34 total extra base hits here Saturday afternoon in splitting both ends of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at Rawlings Field.
Regis opened the doubleheader by scoring 20 runs and recording 25 hits in posting a 20-12 win over the Pack, before the Pack rebounded in the nightcap by scoring 16 runs on 16 hits and holding off a seventh-inning rally by the Rangers to post a 16-15 win.
With the doubleheader split, the Pack improves its record to 13-12 overall and 3-4 in the RMAC, while Regis falls to 18-11 overall and 8-3 in the league. The two teams will conclude the four-game series with a 12 p.m. game on Sunday, March 23.
On the day, redshirt senior first baseman
Christian Castaneda (El Paso, Texas/Otero JC) went 4-for-7 with two runs scored and had 8 RBI and a 1.143 slugging percentage in the doubleheader, while freshman centerfielder
Noah Williams (Corona, Calif./Redondo Union) went 5-for-9 with six runs scored and three stolen bases and senior rightfielder
Elijah Borjas (Denver, Colo./Lakewood) was 4-for-8 with four runs scored in the doubleheader. With his four hits, Castaneda extended his hit streak to 25 games as he has hit safely in all 25 games this season for the Pack.
In the two games, which featured wind gusts of over 30 miles per hour blowing out to right field, the two teams combined to go 67-for-144 (.466) at the plate, including the Pack going 26-for-63 at the plate (.413) and had five doubles, one triple and five home runs. Meanwhile, Regis was 41-for-81 (.506) at the plate with seven doubles, three triples and eight home runs.
GAME TWO
After falling 20-12 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, the Pack would rebound to post a 16-15 win in the nightcap, including scoring five runs in the sixth inning to turn a 12-11 deficit into a 16-12 lead heading into the seventh inning. In the seventh, Regis scored three runs and had the go-ahead run on second base when sophomore
Jack Novak (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Thunder Ridge), the third Pack pitcher of the game, forced Peter Goldy to ground out to senior shortstop
Kade Snodgrass (Derby, Kan./Neosho County CC) to end the game.
Trailing 12-11 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Pack sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs on four hits, including a 2-run single by junior catcher
Cody Macias (San Diego, Calif./Granite Hills) to give the Pack a 13-12 lead. Williams would then follow with an RBI single to give the Pack a 14-12 lead and two batters later, Castaneda delivered a 2-run double to right center to give the Pack a 16-12 lead.
In the seventh, the Rangers made things interesting against Novak as they used three hits and a Pack error to score three runs, including an RBI double by Maxim Fullerton to bring the Rangers within 16-15. Fullerton's double came one batter after senior second baseman
Kolton Miller (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) committed an error on a routine ground ball by Jack Moulin to keep the game going. Following Fullerton's double, Goldy stepped to the plate and Novak would force him to ground out to Snodgrass to short to seal the win.
Regis got the scoring started in the nightcap on an RBI single by Adam Paniagua, who was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and 3 RBI in the nightcap, to take a 1-0 lead off of fifth-year senior hurler
Nick Perry (Denton, Texas/Richland JC), who started the nightcap for the Pack.
The Pack, though, would respond by plating four runs in the bottom of the first as Williams led off the inning with a home run. The second run came home on an error on a failed pickoff attempt by the Rangers and the third run came home on a sacrifice fly by senior third baseman
Kysen Howard (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest). The final run came off a solo home run by Borjas.
Snodgrass gave the Pack a 5-1 lead after leading off the bottom of the second inning with his first home run of the season.
Regis would pull within 5-3 in the top of the third thanks to a 2-run homer by Paniagua off of Perry. The homer by Paniagua was his NCAA Division II-leading 21st of the season.
The Pack added two more runs in the bottom of the third on an fielder's choice and an RBI ground out by senior catcher
Brady Ingalls (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) to take a 7-3 lead.
Regis, though, took an 8-7 lead in the top of the fourth inning as they used three hits and a Pack error to score five runs. The big hit in the inning was a 2-run triple by Ethan Wood.
The Pack tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a double and stolen base by Williams and a sacrifice fly by Castaneda.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Pack retook the lead thanks to a bases clearing double down the left field line by senior leftfielder
Wyatt Reginato (Cottonwood, Calif./Folsom Lake) to give the Pack an 11-8 lead.
The Rangers would respond in the top of the sixth as they used four hits including a 2-run homer by Moulin and a solo homer by Maxim Fullerton to take a 12-11 lead.
In the game, Williams was 3-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored and 2 RBI, while Borjas was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Reginato was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI, while Castaneda was also 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and sophomore centerfielder
Logan Kelly (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Capistrano Valley Christian) was 2-for-2 at the plate.
Regis got two hits each from seven different players, while Paniagua, Wood and Moulin each had three RBI in the loss.
Novak (1-1) earned the win in relief as he tossed one inning and allowed three hits and three runs (two earned), while walking one and fanning none. Perry tossed 3.2 innings and allowed eight hits and eight runs (four earned), while striking out two and walking two.
Wyatt Zsidisin (1-2), who was the third of five Regis pitchers, tossed a 0.1 innings and allowed one hit and two runs, while walking one.
The Pack committed two errors in the game and led six runners on base. Regis stranded seven runners on base.
GAME ONE
In the opener, the two teams combined for 32 runs, 35 hits, including seven home runs and a total obf 13 extra base hits.
The Pack scored 12 runs and had 10 hits, including hitting two home runs and four extra base hits, while Regis scored 20 runs and had 25 hits, including five home runs and nine extra base hits.
Castaneda was 2-for-5 at the plate with a run scored and five RBI, including a grand slam in the bottom of the third inning. The grand slam has Castaneda's six homer of the season.
In addition to Castaneda, junior designated hitter
George Andrews (Overland Park, Kan./Coffeyville CC) and Williams each had two hits and scored two runs, while senior shortstop
Rob Mansour (La Verne, Calif./Cuesta College) drove in three runs.
Regis jumped out to a 8-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Clay Conn led off the game with a solo home run over the wall in right center and four batters later, Moulin drilled a 1-1 pitch over the wall in center for a three-run homer and Fullerton followed with a solo homer over the wall in right and the sixth run came home on an RBI triple by Westin Miller off of junior
Luke Ruby (Fort Collins, Colo./Resurrection Christian). The final two runs came on a 2-run inside the park homer by Conn off of redshirt junior reliever
Cole Bloomer (Arapahoe, Colo./Lamar CC).
The Rangers' lead grew to 9-0 after Peter Goldy was hit by a Bloomer pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the second inning.
CSU Pueblo plated five runs in the bottom of the second thanks to three hits and a Regis error to drop the Rangers' lead to 9-5. Mansour brought home two runs on his 2-run single through the right side. Later in the inning with the bases loaded and two outs, the Rangers committed an error on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of senior leftfielder
Wyatt Reginato (Cottonwood, Calif./Folsom Lake) that allowed two runners to score to pull the Pack within 9-4 and Castaneda brought the fifth run on his RBI single through the left side.
Regis, though, extended its lead to 12-5 in the top of third inning thanks to five hits, including RBI singles by Panigua, Moulin and Goldy.
The Pack answered back in the bottom of the third as they used four runs and plated six runs, including four runs on a grand slam over the right field wall by Castaneda to pull within 12-11. The other runs came home on an RBI triple by Andrews and an RBI groundout by Mansour.
After neither team scored in the fourth and fifth innings, Regis plated six runs in the top of the sixth thanks to six hits and a Pack error to take an 18-11 lead.
The Rangers added some insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a 2-run homer by Ethan Wood to give Regis a 20-11 lead.
Andrews capped the scoring on his solo homer in the bottom of the seventh to pull the Pack within 20-12.
Fullerton paced the Rangers offensively as he was 6-for-6 at the plate, while Moulin was 4-for-6 with three runs scored and 5 RBI. Goldy was 4-for-5 at the plate with 3 RBI.
Ruby (0-2) took the loss as he faced just nine hitters and recorded two outs as he allowed six hits and seven runs and walked one. For the game, the Pack used
Mason Ashcraft started for the Rangers and he tossed 2.2 innings and allowed seven hits and nine runs (six earned runs), while walking striking out five and walking three.
Noah McCandless (3-2) earned the win in relief as he tossed the final 4.1 innings and allowed three hits and two runs (two earned), while striking out three and walking one.
