Women's Tennis Concludes Kansas Trip with Exhibition Match at Barton County CC

GREAT BEND, Kan. – The Colorado State University Pueblo women's tennis team concluded its two-game trip to the Sunflower State here Saturday with an exhibition match against Barton County Community College played indoors at the Barton Indoor Courts.

Both teams played Saturday's match shorthanded as the Pack were missing two players due to the flu, while Barton was missing three players due to illness. Barton would win the exhibition match, 4-2.

Saturday's match began with doubles and each team won a doubles match as the Pack won at the No. 2 spot by default, while the Pack's No. 1 team of junior Valentina Brienza (Rionero in Vulture, Italy/University of District Columbia) and junior Marta Garcia (Alcala de Hernares, Spain/Cardinal Stritch) fell to Barton County's No. 1 team of Vania Dotse and Diana Souza, 7-6.

Following doubles play, the two teams turned their attention to singles play and BCCC was able to secure the win by winning three of the four singles matches that were contested. The teams did not play No. 5 and No. 6 singles on Saturday.

In singles play, Dotse gave BCCC a 2-1 lead in the match following her 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot over Garcia.

The Pack, though, picked up its second win at No. 2 singles as Brienza would collect a 6-3, 6-1 win over Souza to even the match a 2-all.

Senior Mayala Pendon (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo East) battled with Salalee Seejong at No. 3 singles as Pendon won seven games in the match but fell 6-3, 6-4 to Seejong to give BCCC a 3-2 lead in the match.

The final match of the day came at No. 4 singles as Souza faced freshman McKayla Martinez (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo County). Souza would prevail 8-4 over Martinez to secure the match win for Barton County.
