Little Sets New Career School Scoring Record in RMAC Road Setback to Black Hills State

Little Scored 14 Points to Break Nadia Fercha's Old School Record of 1,497 Career Points

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Colorado State University Pueblo two-time All-American redshirt senior forward Alisha Little (Aurora, Colo./University of Northern Colorado) hit two free throws with 4:47 remaining in the game here Thursday night against Black Hills State to become the ThunderWolves' all-time leading scorer, but the Pack were outscored 35-26 in the middle two quarters to suffer a 62-48 setback to the Yellow Jackets in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at the A2 Arena on the BHSU campus.

With the setback, the Pack falls to 12-8 overall and 8-5 in the RMAC, while BHSU improves to 14-7 overall and 9-4 in the RMAC. The loss dropped the Pack into a tie with UCCS for fifth place in the league standings with seven games left in the regular season.

Little's free throws gave her 12 points in the game to eclipse Nadia Fercha's all-time school record of 1,597, which she achieved from 2000-04. Little finished the game with 14 points and added 11 rebounds for her sixth straight double-double and her NCAA Division II-leading 17th double-double of the season. Little has now scored a new school record 1,600 career points at CSU Pueblo and 2,420 in her collegiate career, which is second all-time in women's basketball in the state of Colorado. In addition, she has had 41 double-doubles in 53 games for the Pack since the beginning of last season.

After being held to just two points in the first half, Little scored 12 of her points in the second half, including hitting the two free throws to establish a new school career scoring record.

In addition to Little senior guard Tomia Johnson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Florida Gulf Coast) and Tosjanae Bonds (Denver, Colo./MSU Denver) each tallying eight points as Bonds also added six rebounds. Senior guard Shamahra Henderson (Denver, Colo./Cowley County CC) had five points, five rebounds and three steals.

For the game, the Pack shot 34 percent from the field and 29 percent (7-for-24) from the 3-point line, while BHSU shot 41 percent from the field and 40 percent from the 3-point line, including a 5-for-11 effort from long distance in the second half to outscore the Pack, 35-27.

The Pack, who trailed 27-21 at the half, stayed in the opening half thanks to hitting 5-of-11 treys as they scored 15 of their 21 points from long distance. BHSU lead at the half thanks to a 6-for-9 effort from the free throw line and making three more field goals than the Pack.

In the first period, BHSU jumped out to an 6-0 lead and led 11-3 just a little less than six minutes into the game when the Pack closed the period by scoring the final seven points, including sophomore forward Brynae Stewart (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) and Bonds drilled back-to-back treys over the final two minutes of the period to cut BHSU's lead to 11-10 after the opening 10 minutes of play. In the period, the Pack was 3-for-6 from the 3-point line, while BHSU was 1-for-4 from long distance.

The Pack opened the second period by scoring three of the first four points to take a 13-12 lead just two minutes into the period. The Yellow Jackets, though, responded with an 8-0 run to take a 20-13 lead with 6:02 left in the period. The Pack answered back with an 8-2 run capped by a lay-up by Little with 1:07 left in the period to cut BHSU's lead to 22-21. The basket by Little was the first of the game for the reigning RMAC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week.

BHSU closed the period by scoring six straight points to take a 27-21 halftime lead. The Pack is now 5-7 this season when trailing at the half.

The Yellow Jackets made seven of its 15 third period shots, including going 3-for-6 from the 3-point line en route to outscoring the Pack, 19-15, in the period to hold a 46-36 lead heading into the final period.

BHSU would extend its third period lead to 62-42 nearly seven minutes into the final period the Yellow Jackets opened the fourth period on a 16-7 run. The 19-point lead was the largest of the game for the Yellow Jackets. The Pack would score the final six points, including a lay-up and a free throw from sophomore guard Jolene Ramiro (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest) to complete a 3-point play with five seconds left in the game to cap the scoring.

Bradie Schlabs paced the Yellow Jackets with 24 points, while Kalia Bertram added 17 and 10 rebounds and Morgan Hammerbeck tallied 12 points.

The Pack were outrebounded on the night, 45-29, including 9-2 edge on the offensive boards and the two teams combined for just 18 turnovers as the Pack had 10 on the night and that led to seven points for BHSU, while BHSU had eight turnovers that led to nine points for the Pack.  

CSU Pueblo also blocked four shots with all four coming from Little and had 10 assists on their 16 made baskets.

The teams were whistled for a combined 17 fouls in the game and shot a combined 20 free throws as the Pack was 5-for-9 (55.6 percent) from the line, while BHSU was 8-for-11 (72.7 percent). The five made free throws and nine free throw attempts were season lows for the Pack.

CSU Pueblo, who has three of its last four games, will look to rebound on Saturday, Feb. 8, as they play a 1 p.m. game in Chadron, Neb., against Chadron State (4-15 overall, 3-10 RMAC). The Eagles fell 99-98 at home in overtime on Thursday to Colorado Christian.
