PUEBLO, Colo. (February 28, 2025) - Colorado State University Pueblo softball junior
Madelyn Huerta (Azusa, Calif.) hit two home runs and collected 7 RBI and helped lead the CSU Pueblo softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Regis on Friday to start a four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) series at Rawlings Softball Complex.
On the day, CSU Pueblo recorded eight extra-base hits including two home runs, four doubles and a triple en route to the DH sweep. In the circle,
Marissa Robertson (Jr., Rocklin, Calif.) and
McKenna James (Jr., Windsor, Colo.) collected wins and both tossed gems and earned wins.
Game One recap
The ThunderWolves used an 8-run second inning in the series opener, highlighted by a 3-run blast hit by Huerta, capped the inning.
The Pack got things started with the first three batters getting on base and the first run crossed on a SAC bunt for a 1-0 lead.
Two more runs scored in the next at bat when
Darleen Falcon (Jr., Moreno Valley, Calif.) hit a 2-run double to left center and gave the Pack a 3-0 advantage.
Aggressive base running caused a throwing error on the defense, allowing another run to score.
The fifth run of the frame scored on a double steal play, rewarding the ThunderWolves' smart base running.
The inning finally ended following the blast hit from Huerta.
In the third, Regis scored three runs on three hits, highlighted by a 3-run home run from Morgan Norris.
A scoreless third inning from the Pack led to the fourth and Robertson came on in relief of
Mia Sanchez (Fr., Los Angeles, Calif.) whose day finished with 3.0 IP adn gave up three runs on two hits and a strikeout.
Robertson gave up two singles and got out of the inning unscathed to get the ThunderWolves back on offense.
In the home half of the fourth, the first four batters reached base and brought up Huerta to the plate and she belted a 2-1 count over the wall in right center and extended the lead.
Falcon stepped up with two outs and a runner in scoring position and singled down the left field line for the fifth run of the inning.
Ahead by ten, Robertson slammed the door in the fifth and induced a ground out to finish the game, 13-3 (5 inn.) as a result of the run rule.
Robertson improves her record to 1-1 on the year.
Game Two recap
The second game turned into a pitcher's dual between James and RU's Hallie Crappell as the duo surrendered four runs combined and allowed 12 total hits in the contest.
James finished with the win and tossed a CG and gave up one run on five hits and she ended the game with a season-high eight strikeouts.
The first two batters went a combined 4-for-5 and the team collected seven hits in the game including two doubles and a home run.
CSU Pueblo took a 1-0 lead in the second after Falcon earned a walk and would later come around to score on a ground out to the right side.
A scoreless third inning from both teams set up another run to score in the B4 when Falcon came up and crushed a solo shot over the wall for a 2-0 lead.
Another run for the ThunderWolves came in their next at bat on a RBI-double hit by Barela.
Regis broke the shutout with a single run in the sixth on a single up the middle.
After giving up the run, James struck out the next batter and the next batter was retired on a ground out.
In the seventh, James earned another strikeout and retired the side in order to close out the 3-1 Pack victory.
James improves her record to 3-5 this season.

CSU Pueblo (7-10, 6-4 RMAC) will close out the series with two more game on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at Rawlings Softball Complex.
