PUEBLO, Colo. (March 1, 2025) - The Colorado State University Pueblo softball team split its last two games of a four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) series versus Regis University and won the first game 8-7, before dropping the series finale 5-3 in the series finale on Saturday at Rawlings Softball Complex.
For the day,
Madelyn Huerta (Jr., Azusa, Calif.) led the offense and went 5-for-7 (.714) at the plate with one walk and three RBI. Huerta finished a strong weekend offensively and finished with a .583 average, seven hits, one double and two HRs and 10 RBI.
Game One recap
In the first game, both teams combined for 15 runs and 24 hits and the ThunderWolves' offense was guided by Huerta's 3-for-3 outing as she earned two RBI with a walk and reached again after being hit by the pitch.
Mia Sanchez (Fr., Los Angeles, Calif.) started in the circle and lasted 4.0 innings and gave up four runs and six hits.
Emma Case (So., Loveland, Colo.) collected two RBI, along with single RBI earned by
Taylor Brower (Jr., Vacaville, Calif.)
Juliannah Jimenez (So., Elk Grove, Calif.) and
Ashley Tosh (Sr., Fremont, Calif.).
The Pack put traffic on the bases early and left two runners on after the first and another runner was left stranded in the second before Regis got on the board in the T3.
Regis scored three runs on three hits and scored one run on a wild pitch and a 2-run homer gave the Rangers an early 3-0 lead.
The Rangers added another run in the fourth before CSU Pueblo went on offense in the bottom of the inning.
In their half of the fourth, CSU Pueblo had the first three batters reach safely and the first Pack run came as a result of a defensive error. Later in the inning, a SAC bunt-RBI by Jimenez and a RBI-single from Tosh, cut into the Rangers lead.
With two outs still in the B4, Case stepped in and singled to left, scoring two more runs and gave the Pack a 5-4 lead.
Starting the fifth inning, CSU Pueblo made a change at pitcher and called upon
Lucy Carney (Sr., Lakewood, Colo.) to enter the circle. Carney gave up three runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of work and allowed Regis to regain the lead 7-5.
The Pack went down in order during the fifth and Regis was quickly retired in the T6 before the ThunderWolves went back on offense.
In the sixth, CSU Pueblo tied the game after getting runners on base and Brower singled to left center, scoring
Tori Cordova (Sr., Pueblo West, Colo.) who came in to pinch run.
Later, Huerta stepped to the plate with one out and hit a single up the middle and tied the game.
in the seventh,
McKenna James (Jr., Windsor, Colo.) came on in relief and Regis got one runner on base but James was able to get out of the inning unscathed and set up a big bottom of the seventh.
Tied at 7-7 entering the B7, the first two batters reached safely and a SAC bunt moved them both into scoring position. Following a walk and a fly out, Huerta stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and one hit and hit a single to center field, scoring the winning run.
James gets the win in the circle and moves to 4-5 on the year.
Game Two recap
In the series finale, Regis went ahead with two runs in the first before the ThunderWolves got one run back in their half of the first. For the Pack in their first at bat, Case hit a SAC fly out to get the run across.
Regis put up three more runs in the second and another single run would score in the B3Â for CSU Pueblo. Huerta crushed an RBI-double to left center to score the run.
The score went unchanged thru the middle innings. Trailing 5-2 entering their last at bat, CSU Pueblo scored one run on a SAC fly and put the tying run at the plate.
In their last chance to even the score, a fly out to right ended the threat and the game, 7-5 in favor of Regis.
Marissa Robertson (Jr., Rocklin, Calif.) was tabbed with the loss and drops to 1-2 on the year.
On Deck
CSU Pueblo (8-11, 7-5 RMAC) will remain at home next week and host Adams State University in a four-game RMAC series starting Friday at Rawlings Softball Complex.
