COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Colorado State University Pueblo Women's Basketball squad picked up their ninth straight win on Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs 74-66.
With the win, the Pack improved to 11-3 overall and remained perfect at 6-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play, while UCCS fell to 7-6 overall and 3-3 in the RMAC. CSU Pueblo and Black Hills State both remain atop the league at 6-0.
Saturday's win was fueled by the ThunderWolves' superstar and two-time All-American forward
Alisha Little (Aurora, Colo./Northern Colorado), as the senior made history, breaking the school record for most blocks in a single game with 11. The 11 blocks were also tied for the third-most blocks in a game in the state of Colorado history as Colorado School of Mines' Kim Good blocked 11 shots against Chadron State in 1999-00.Â
Along with the 11 blocked shots, Little also recorded her first career triple-double and the school's first triple-double since JaNaiya Davis posted one in 2019 against UCCS. Little's final stat line included 28 points, 14 rebounds, 11 blocks, and one steal in the win. The double-double was Little's nine straight and 40th of her Pack career, which is tied for tops on the school's career charts.Â
Little was complemented by
Landri Hudson (Aurora, Colo./Wyoming) as the ThunderWolves' sharpshooter got hot on Saturday afternoon, scoring 16 points, including 4-7 from deep.Â
The Pack had one of their better shooting performances on the season from deep, going 7-17 from behind the arc. The Pack also shot 39 percent from the field on 20-52 shooting. CSU Pueblo had a solid day at the free throw line as well, going 27-35.
The ThunderWolves did all they could to try and hold UCCS's superstar and one of the league's best two-way players in Amyah Moore Allen in check, but were unable as Moore Allen had 30 points on 11-23 shooting.Â
What CSU Pueblo was able to accomplish was holding the rest of the Mountain Lions in check, as Head Coach
Tommie Johnson's squad had stifling defense, not allowing another member of UCCS to reach double figures. UCCS ended the night only shooting 21 percent from deep and 34 percent from the field.
ABOUT THE WIN
The Pack started the game off hot out the gates, opening up an early 7-2 lead with early buckets from Little and Hudson. The ThunderWolves continued their hot start, leading as many as 10 at 14-4 when
Genesis Sweetwine (Aurora, Colo./Northeastern) started to get hot.
UCCS made a quick run, cutting the lead back down to three at 14-11 with buckets from Moore Allen and Maison White. The ThunderWolves answered nicely again, extending their lead back to nine on a 6-0 run from
Shamahra Henderson (Denver, Colo./Cowley County),
Tomia Johnson (Colorado Springs, Colo./FGCU), and Little.
UCCS could not make up any more ground in the period and the Pack took a 23-14 lead after one quarter.Â
Little set the tone in the first quarter with eight points and four blocks.
The second quarter started off slow for both teams as neither squad scored until the 7:54 mark with Moore Allen scoring off a turnover, but Hudson countered with a three to put the Pack back up double digits at 26-16.
The lead for the ThunderWolves hovered around 10 for a few minutes, but the Mountain Lions made their charge at the five minutes mark, going on a 10-0 run to tie the game at 28 apiece.
Sweetwine gave the ThunderWolves the lead back with an and one jumper to stop the bleeding. The Pack were able to get a stop, leading to a Hudson three-pointer to put CSU Pueblo back up five at 34-29 with 3:30 left to go in the half.
UCCS once again went on a run and eventually tied the game at 36-36 and even took the lead at 38-36 with a couple of free throws from Moore Allen.
Little was able to make a couple of free throws to tie the game back at 38-38. CSU Pueblo ended the last 40 seconds on a mini 4-0 run from
Tosjanae Bonds (Denver, Colo./MSU Denver) and
Brynae Stewart (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) to snatch back the momentum going into halftime.
CSU Pueblo did a great job in the third quarter staving off runs from the Mountain Lions, keeping the lead at bay around six to seven points for most of the quarter. UCCS did cut the lead down to two with under a minute to play in the third, when Krystina Hagood caught fire for UCCS, but the Pack were able to go on a quick 5-0 run with buckets from Little and Johnson the last 30 seconds to put the Pack up 61-54 going into the final frame.
The Pack opened their lead back up to 10 one minute into the fourth when Johnson hit a big crowd hushing three pointer.Â
With UCCS still lurking around, the Pack quietly put the game out of reach when Little took over. The ThunderWolves superstar when on a silent 6-0 run to put the Pack up 14 with five minutes to play.
CSU Pueblo had their biggest lead of the game, when Stewart knocked in a couple of free throws to put CSU Pueblo up 16 at 72-56.Â
CSU Pueblo was able to run out the clock the last few minutes, allowing some garbage time buckets from UCCS. CSU Pueblo eventually took home to victory 74-66.
