Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Second half surge carries No. 2 ThunderWolves past Patriots

PUEBLO, Colo. (September 14, 2024) - No. 2 Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer returned to the win column on Saturday and scored three second half goals en route to a 3-0 shutout win over University of Texas at Tyler at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.

In the match, Dylan Zavatini (Gr., Santa Catarina, Brazil), Shjon Andrews (Gr., Longmont, Colo.) and George Tidmarsh (So., Birmingham, England) all scored for the Pack.

"Top performance today from the whole group," said CSU Pueblo Head Coach Oliver Twelvetrees. "Superior in every facet. (I'm) happy to get back to winning ways. Proud of the efforts all around."

The ThunderWolves dominated the match and registered 17 shots against three from the Patriots. The ThunderWolves dominated from the onset and controlled the ball in UT Tyler territory for majority of the first half.

CSU Pueblo made the first four shots in the game and earned three corners all within the first 14 minutes of play.

The Pack continued to pressure the Patriots and did not allow UT Tyler a shot until the 28th minute.

At the break, CSU Pueblo registered nine shots and six corners.

Entering the second period, the ThunderWolves took control of the ball once again and in the 51st minute, Caio Oliveira (Sr., Espigao d'Oeste, Brazil) fired a shot that went high and out of play for a UTT goal kick.

The Pack kept the ball on the attacking side of the pitch and was rewarded for their efforts in the 57th minute on a corner kick taken by Oliveira. He served the ball inside the 18-yard box and after a scramble to knock the ball down, Zavatini was able to get a header on the ball and into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

The tides shifted slightly after the ThunderWolves goal in favor of the Patriots who increased their energy over the next 10 minutes.

UT Tyler gained control and earned a corner in the 83rd minute and the Pack went on a counter-attack and Joey Joiner (Sr., Westminster, Colo.) launched a shot that resulted in a Pack corner kick.

On the corner, Oliveira, the corner kick specialist once again kicked in a ball high and away from the defense, allowing Andrews to get above the defense and head in a score, his second goal of the year.

Minutes later in the 88th minute, Tidmarsh intercepted the ball and drove it down field, striking a shot that went high into the net for the three score lead.

At the net, Ruben Volkert (Gr., Baden-Württemberg, Germany) earned the shutout win and made two saves against three shots.

CSU Pueblo (3-1) will hit the road for the first time this season and head to Oklahoma City for games against Oklahoma Christian on Thursday and will stay in OKC and battle Rogers State on Saturday at Eagle Soccer Field.
