Men's Lacrosse Wins Second Straight, Posts Home Victory Over Tusculum

Victory Gives Pack Two-Game Win Streak Since Winning Three Straight Games in 2019

PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo concluded non-conference play here Tuesday evening as the ThunderWolves collected its second straight victory as they earned a 14-11 victory over Tusculum University at ALG Stadium.
 
The two-game win streak is the longest for the Pack since winning three straight games since the 2019 season and the two wins this season are the most for the program since going 3-9 during the 2022 season.
 
With the win, the Pack improved to 2-9 overall, while Tusculum falls to 1-14 on the year.
 
In Tuesday night's game, the Pack trailed 9-8 at the half, but outscored the Pioneers, 6-2, in the second half, including scoring four goals in the third period, to post the come-from-behind victory.
 
The Pack outshot the Pioneers, 47-31, including 20-10 in the second half and got a combined 10 goals from sophomore midfielder Chris Easley (Southington, Conn./Weber), sophomore attacker Andrew Dzubak (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Mount Saint Vincent) and sophomore attacker Kyle Parker (Hamilton, New Zealand/Northland College). Easley scored a career-high four goals, while Dzubak tallied three goals and added an assist for four points and Parker had three goals and an assist for four points. Senior midfielder Kevin Gallagher (Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View) totaled a career-high tying two goals and added an assist in the win.
 
Much like Saturday's home game against Adams State, the Pack jumped out to a fast start as they scored three goals in the first seven-plus minutes of the game to take a 3-0 lead. Dzubak got the scoring started on a goal just 3:40 into the game off an assist by Gallagher, before Campbell scored a goal off the face-off just 13 seconds later to give the Pack a 2-0 lead and then Easley scored the first of his four goals off an assist by senior midfielder CJ Rowe (Indianapolis, Ind./CU-Chicago) with 7:36 left in the opening period.
 
Tusculum, though, responded by scoring three goals in a span of 63 seconds late in the first period to tie the game at 3-all after the first 15 minutes of play.
 
Easley's second goal of the game just 65 seconds into the second period gave the Pack a 4-3 lead, but TU retied the game on a goal by Wesley Phillips with 11:05 left in the period. The Pack retook the lead on an unassisted goal by Gallagher with 8:54 left in the period.
 
The Pioneers would respond by scoring three straight goals to take a 7-5 lead with 5:06 left in the first half. The Pack stopped TU's scoring run with a back-to-back goals in a span of eight seconds by Easley and sophomore midfielder Aaron Bell (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) to retie the game at 7-all with 4:26 left in the period. TU would score two straight goals to retake the lead at 9-7, before the Pack capped the scoring in the period on an unassisted goal by Parker with 27 seconds left. Parker's goal pushed the Pack within 9-8 at the half. The two teams combined for 11 goals and 24 shots in the second period.
 
Easley's goal less than two minutes into the third period that was assisted by junior attacker Johnny Cole (University Place, Wash./Curtis Senior) helped retie the game at 9-all. The Pack retook the lead for good on a man-up goal by Dzubak that was assisted by Cole with 12:35 left in the period. The Pack added two goals by Parker to close the period to give the Pack a 12-9 lead heading into the final period.
 
Dzubak scored his third goal of the game off an assist by Parker just 2:05 into the fourth period to give the Pack a 13-9 lead. The lead grew to 14-9 on an unassisted goal by Gallagher with 8:45 left in the game.
 
TU would get back-to-back goals by Chase Penner over the final six minutes of the game to cut the Pack's lead to 14-11.
 
Dzubak (13) and Parker (10) combined for 23 of the Pack's 47 shots, while Dzubak (10), Parker (5) and Easley (5) combined for 20 of the Pack's 28 shots on goal.
 
Tusculum won the ground ball battle, 52-47, as Dzubak and Rowe each had six ground balls, while Parker added five ground balls. Nathan Fraser had eight of TU's 52 ground balls.
 
The Pack were 16-for-18 on clears, while TU was 18-for-25 on clears in the contest.
 
Both teams each won 15 face-offs as Bell was 8-for-14 and Campbell was 7-for-16. Fraser had 12 of TU's 15 face-off wins.
 
Freshman Cole Rutz (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) played all 60 minutes in the cage and recorded eight saves, allowed 11 goals, and had two ground balls.
 
The Pack were credited with 19 caused turnovers, which is tied for fourth-most in a game in school history. Sophomore defender Bergen Anderson (Lincoln, Neb./Southwest), freshman defender Logan Place (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail) and sophomore defender Tanner Barnard (Reno, Nev./Reno) each had four in the contest. Tusculum finished with 22 turnovers, while the Pack had 15 turnovers.
 
Phillips led TU with three goals and an assist for four points, while Penner, Clay Mendez, and Ben Hobday each had two goals. Phillips took nine shots, while TJ Caldwell took six shots.
 
Nick Adams (0-2) took the loss in the cage for the Pioneers as he played a little over 54 minutes and allowed 14 goals, while recording 14 saves and collecting five ground balls.
 
The teams each had seven extra-man opportunities in the game as the Pack was 3-for-7 for the night and TU finished 2-for-7.
 
CSU Pueblo will return to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference this coming Friday, April 12 with a 6 p.m. MT game at Concordia University Irvine in Irvine, Calif. CUI picked up a 20-8 win in Pueblo on March 24.
