GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (April 26, 2024) - Colorado State University Pueblo softball sophomore utility
Caitlyn Cole (Merced, Calif.) put herself in the Pack softball record books on Friday after she hit her 30th double of the season during game two of a doubleheader at No. 25 Colorado Mesa.
The Pack suffered a 7-1 defeat in the series and dropped a 12-3 (5 inn.) contest in game two at CMU Softball Field. a pair of losses at the hands of No. 25 Colorado Mesa, falling 7-1 in game one and losing a 12-3 (5 inn.) contest in game two on Friday at CMU Softball Field.
Cole set the new record during the fifth inning of game two, breaking Niki Toussaint's record of 29 set in 2001.
Postseason Outlook
With the two losses, CSU Pueblo is still in the driver's seat and maintains hold of the sixth spot over Fort Lewis. FLC is playing its final series at UCCS.
Game one recap
Raelynn Rogers (Jr., Surprise, Ariz.) led at the plate and went 2-for-3.
Emma Case (Fr., Loveland, Colo.)Â and
Darleen Falcon (So., Moreno Valley, Calif.) both recorded a double.
The Pack scored the game's first run in the first inning after Rogers reached with a single on the infield. She got into scoring position on a passed ball and later scored on a RBI ground out from Case for the early 1-0 lead.
Colorado Mesa responded and took the lead in their first at-bat with three runs on four hits.
In the second inning,
Madelyn Huerta (So., Azusa, Calif.) reached base after being hit by the pitch for the eighth time this season and
Juliannah Jimenez (Fr., Elk Grove, Calif.) singled to right and put two runners on base for the Pack.
Following a sac bunt to advance both runners, a strikeout ended the Pack's scoring threat.
The Pack's next best scoring chance came in the fifth inning when two batters reached base with two outs and a line out down the right field ended the inning.
In the bottom half, CMU scored three more runs and built a six-run lead.
Over the final two innings, the Pack managed one hit before a 1-2-3 seventh gave the ThunderWolves the 7-1 loss.
McKenna James (So., Windsor, Colo.) tossed 4.2 innings and allowed seven runs and finished with two strikeouts and three walks. She falls to 8-16 on the year.
Jacelynn Trujillo (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) came on in relief during the fifth inning and did not allow a hit in 1.1 innings in the circle. Trujillo faced five batters and finished with one strikeout and a walk.
Game two recap
CSU Pueblo's offense started the contest with two singles and only one out in the inning before CMU escaped the inning with a fly out and ground out.
Ashley Tosh (Jr., Fremont, Calif.) lead-off the second inning and singled to right field and advanced to third on a fielding error by the right fielder.
The next batter Jimenez, stepped in and hit a 0-2 single through the left side to put the Pack on top 1-0.
Isabella Hewitt (So., Firestone, Colo.) was next to the plate and reached on a fielder's choice and went to second after a throwing error to get into scoring position and only one out.
With Rogers at the plate, aggressive base running and the third error of the game from the Mavericks allowed Hewitt to score after stealing third base and the throw went up the right field line to give the ThunderWolves a 2-0 lead.
Starting in the circle,
Marissa Robertson (So., Rocklin, Calif.) retired five batters in a row to start the game before back-to-back hits from CMU cut the Pack's lead in half 2-1 with two outs in the inning. The Pack got out of the inning with a foul out.
The ThunderWolves were retired in order in the third inning before CMU went back on the attack and took a 5-2 lead after scoring four runs on three hits in the frame.
In the fourth, Tosh singled but was left on base before a fly out sent the ThunderWolves back on defense. Starting the bottom of the fourth,
Lucy Carney (Jr., Lakewood, Colo.) came on in relief of Robertson and the Mavericks scored four more runs and built a 9-2 lead going to the fifth.
Following a 1-2-3 top of the fifth, CMU went back on offense and scored three more runs on three hits to reach the 8-run rule limit, and the game ended 12-3 in favor of the Mavericks.
Robertson was tagged with the loss and falls to 10-9 on the year.
On Deck
CSU Pueblo (22-31, 20-22 RMAC) will finish the series and the regular season with two final games on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at CMU Softball Field.
