PUEBLO, Colo. (April 20, 2024) - The Colorado State University Pueblo softball team concluded its home portion of the schedule with a four-game series split with University of Colorado Colorado Springs. The Pack won games two and four of the series and dropped the first two games each day at Rawlings Softball Complex.
For the series,
Marissa Robertson (So., Rocklin, Calif.) was lights out in the pitcher's circle and went 2-0 along with a complete game on Friday. Robertson finished the weekend with 13.0 innings pitched and gave up two runs and one earned run while striking out five batters. She held the Mountain Lions to a .163 average and posted a 0.69 ERA.
At the plate,
Raelynn Rogers (Jr., Surprise, Ariz.) recorded a .462 average (6-for-13) at the plate and scored two runs and was a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts.
After the doubleheader on Saturday, CSU Pueblo Head Coach
Bianca Duran and her team recognized two departing seniors playing in their final home games as members of the Pack.
Delaney Barela (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) and
Jacelynn Trujillo (Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) both were honored.
On the diamond Saturday, Rogers,Â
Caitlyn Cole (So., Merced, Calif.) and
Ashley Tosh (Jr., Fremont, Calif.) each recorded three hits. Cole and Tosh both tallied two doubles on the day.
Game one recap
In the first game on Saturday, Trujillo started in the circle for the ThunderWolves and had given up one run on three hits through six innings of work and helped to keep the Pack in striking distance in the 1-0 affair.
UCCS went ahead 1-0 in the third inning on a sac fly after the first two batters both singled to reach base safely.
Through the first five innings, CSU Pueblo registered one hit in each inning and would leave the runners stranded on base.
In the bottom of the sixth, Cole led off and swung at the first pitch she seen and crushed a home run over the wall in right centerfield and even the score at 1-1.
The next three Pack players were retired in order, sending the game to the seventh and final inning.
In the inning for UCCS, the Mountain Lions put up five runs on three hits including a grand slam hit by Izzy Giroux to give the Mountain Lions a five-run lead.
In the last at-bat, the ThunderWolves were retired in order, ending the game 6-1 in favor of UCCS.
Trujillo was tagged with the loss and falls to 3-4 on the year.
Game two recap
In the series finale, CSU Pueblo's offense came alive right away and quickly scored two runs in the first inning after Rogers and Cole reached safely and Rogers would come around to score the first run on a defensive throwing error.
Cole plated the second run when
Darleen Falcon (So., Moreno Valley, Calif.) was at the plate and a perfectly executed sac bunt gave the Pack a 2-0 lead.
Following a scoreless and hit-less second and third inning by both teams, CSU Pueblo went ahead 3-0 in their half of the fourth on a RBI-single from Tosh, scoring Falcon who led off the inning with a double.
In the top of the fifth, UCCS got on the board and took advantage of a error against the Pack and continued to trail 3-1.
The Mountain Lions added a second run in the sixth after a ground out on the infield allowed for the run to cross.
Clinging to the one-run lead, heading to the seventh,
McKenna James (So., Windsor, Colo.) came on in relief and tossed a scoreless seventh inning and allowed one hit before a ground out on the infield ended the game 3-2 in favor of the Pack.
Robertson earned the win and improves her record to 10-8 on the year and James picks up her second save of the season.
On Deck
CSU Pueblo hits the road next week and will compete in the final series of the regular season at Colorado Mesa. The four-game series begins Saturday in Grand Junction.
