Baseball Splits Saturday Home Doubleheader with Adams State

Pack Leads Series 2-1, Looks for Series Win Sunday on Senior Day

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo baseball team split Saturday's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader at home against second place Adams State University.

With the 1-1 Saturday outing, CSU Pueblo now leads the series 2-1 over the Grizzlies. The Pack are now 25-19 overall, and 14-13 in RMAC play. Adams State is now 20-22 overall, and 14-9 in RMAC play.

Adams State responded well after the Pack dominated game one of the series on Friday night, winning in dominant fashion in game one on Saturday 14-1. The Pack responded well in game three, winning 9-4.

GAME ONE
CSU Pueblo threw the first punch in game one when senior Christian Castaneda (El Paso, Texas/Otero JC) drove in a run on an RBI groundout to put the Pack up 1-0. Adams State responded in the top of the second inning when Jack Dere singled in a run to tie the game.

Adams State took control of the game in the third inning when Mike Bathauer singled to right field to score two runs to give the Grizzlies a 3-1 lead. In the fourth inning Joseph Raker scored on a wild pitch, and Nolan Marthaler singled in a run giving Adams State a 5-1 lead.

The Grizzlies continued to pour it on the ThunderWovles in the fifth inning scoring nine runs to put the game out reach, putting 15 batters to the plate in the inning.

Bathauer scored a run on an error to extend the lead to five, which was followed up by his brother Matt Bathauer singling in a run to put the Grizzlies up 7-1. The Grizzlies continued their hot fifth inning when Jack Dere singled in a run to make the score 8-1.

Adams State finished the inning scoring six more runs to extend their lead to 14-1 and that concluded the scoring from both teams for the rest of the game.

GAME TWO
The ThunderWolves looked much more composed and collected in game two of the day, behind a strong long relief performance from junior Jacob Petersheim (Broadway, Va./Broadway) as the submarine pitcher went four strong innings, allowing just three hits and one run.

Despite picking up win, Adams State did start the game how they finished the first game as Seth Reker singled in a run right off the bat in the first inning.

However, the Adams State lead was short lived when Kysen Howard (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) knocked in a run on a perfectly executed safety squeeze bunt to tie the game. The Pack took their first lead of the day when Elijah Borjas (Denver, Colo./Lakewood) singled in Castaneda to put CSU Pueblo up 2-1.

Adams State responded in the second inning when Caleb Eiguren hit a sacrifice fly to right to tie the game, which was followed up by Phil Carter singling up the middle to put the Grizzlies back up 3-2.

Trailing by one run in the third, Borjas answered the Grizz with a two RBI single to right field, giving the Pack the lead back at 4-3. Joseph Quintana (Golden, Colo./Erskine College) followed that up with another perfectly executed safety squeeze bunt which scored a run.

CSU Pueblo added more insurance in the fourth inning when Kolton Miller (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) scored on a wild pitch to put the Pack up 6-3. Rob Mansour (LaVerne, Calif./Cuesta College) followed that up with an RBI single to score another run, putting the Pack up 7-3.

Adams State got one more run across in the game when Bathauer knocked in a run on an RBI groundout to make the score 7-4 in the fifth inning. The ThunderWolves answered once again when Cole Knightley (Solvang, Calif./Santa Ynez) singled in a run in the bottom half of the inning.

The Pack were able to muster one more run in the game in the sixth inning when Mansour scored on a throwing error in the sixth inning, winning 9-4.
