Baseball Salvages Series Finale Against MSU Denver on Mansour's Walk-Off Single

Win Snaps Six-Game Losing Skid for ThunderWolves

PUEBLO, Colo. - Colorado State University Pueblo baseball used a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth by junior shortstop Rob Mansour (La Verne, Calif./Cuesta College) to help the ThunderWolves earn a 3-2 win over MSU Denver in its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series finale here Saturday afternoon at Rawlings Field.

The series finale victory help the Pack snap a season-long six game losing skid as they improved thier overall record to 18-14 overall and 7-9 in the RMAC, while MSU Denver falls to 17-17 overall and 8-8 in the RMAC. MSU Denver, though, won three out of four games on the weekend to earn the series win.

Mansour's game-winning walk-off single came one batter after junior Kade Snodgrass (Derby, Kan./Neosho County CC) led off the inning with a pinch-hit triple to carried to the wall in right center. Following Snodgrass' triple, Mansour, who is the No. 9 hitter in the Pack lineup, stepped to the plate and on an 0-2 count from Carson Brown, he drilled a ball into right field to score Snodgrass and seal the Pack's victory.

The ninth-inning heroics wouldn't have been needed had the Pack not had a base running blunder in the bottom of the eighth from junior third baseman Kysen Howard (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) as he opened the eighth by reaching on an error, moved to second on a wild pitch and then was thrown out at the plate on a double to right center off the bat of senior leftfielder Christian Castaneda (El Paso, Texas/Otero JC). It appeared that Miller misjudged how deep the ball was hit by Castaneda and was unable score on the play.

For the game, the Pack was outhit, 10-8, as Castaneda finished the game with three hits in four at-bats to pace the Pack. In addition to Castaneda, junior leftfielder Elijah Borjas (Denver, Colo./Lakewood) added two hits, including a lead-off homer in the bottom of the fifth inning. MSU Denver finished the series outhitting the Pack, 59-29 and outscored the Pack, 43-13.

The Pack took its first lead of the series in the bottom of the fifth inning on Borjas' lead off solo home run over the wall in left to give the Pack a 1-0 lead. The homer was the ninth of the season for Borjas.

CSU Pueblo would put two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth as Howard was hit by a pitch and Stone then walked with one out. Howard would be erased as he was picked off on a double steal attempt for the second out, but the Pack added a second run on an RBI double down the left field line by Castaneda. Castaneda's RBI was his team-leading 45th of the season.

MSU Denver tallied four straight singles with two outs in the top of the seventh off senior reliever Nick Perry (Denton, Texas/Richland JC) to tie the game at 2-all.

Mansour's game winning single made winner out of freshman Jack Novak (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Thunder Ridge), who was the third pitcher of Saturday's game. Novak tossed 2.1 innings and allowed one hit and no runs, while striking out four. Novak improved to 2-1 on the season with the win.

Redshirt senior Edwing Corrales (Delicias, Mexico/Otero JC) started on the mound for the Pack and held the Roadrunners in check for his four-plus innings as he allowed just four hits and no runs, while striking out two and walking none before he was pulled due to a sore shoulder after allowing a lead-off double in the fifth inning by Caleb Albaugh. Perry would replace Corrales on the mound and tossed 2.2 innings and allowed five hits and two runs, while walking one and fanning two.

Brown (1-2) took the loss for the Roadrunners as he pitched one-plus innings and allowed three hits and one run, while walking one and striking out two. Dylan Webber started on the mound for MSU Denver as he tossed six innings and allowed five hits and two runs, while walking one and striking out one.

Andrew Biddle, Jake Williams and Tyler Tobey each had two hits for the Roadrunners in Saturday's series finale.

The two teams combined to leave 17 runners on base as the Pack stranded eight and turned two double plays, while MSU Denver left nine runners on base and turned one double play. MSU Denver also committed two errors in the game.

CSU Pueblo will next be in action next weekend (April 5-7) as they travel to Grand Junction, Colo., for a four-game RMAC series against 13th-ranked Colorado Mesa. The series begins with a single game on Friday, April 5 at 6:05 p.m., before playing a doubleheader on Saturday, April 6 at 1 p.m. and concludes with a single game on Sunday, April 7 at 12 p.m.
