COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo sophomore men's basketball guard
Sam Howery (Colorado Springs, Colo./St. Mary's) was one of 10 players named to the 2023-24 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men's Basketball All-Academic First Team on Wednesday afternoon.
In order for a student-athlete to earn RMAC All-Academic First Team honors, the selected student-athlete must meet the following requirements: a) Must be an athlete in one of the conference-sponsored championships sports; b) Must carry a 3.500 cumulative grade point average from the most recently completed semester; c) Must have completed at least two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters at their current active member institution; d) Must use a season of competition.
Howery carries a 3.98 cumulative GPA in Pre-Business at CSU Pueblo and has the fourth highest GPA among the 10 honored student-athletes on the RMAC All-Academic First Team. In addition, the 10 honorees combined to record a 3.906 cumulative GPA.
During the 2023-24 season, Howery saw action in 23 games for the ThunderWolves and he averaged 1.2 points, 1.3 rebounds, 1.0 assists and made six treys on the year. He averaged 12 minutes played per game and scored three or more points in six games, including a high game of five points against Oklahoma Panhandle State. Recorded a 2.2 assist/turnover ratio on the season and collected a total of 12 steals.
Along with announcing the 10 members of the RMAC All-Academic First Team, the league also announced its RMAC Academic Player of the Year and this year's honor went to Colorado School of Mines graduate student guard Sam Beskind. Beskind carries a 3.88 GPA in Advanced Energy Systems/Humanitarian Engineering.
Howery and Beskind are joined on the All-Academic First Team by Chadron State junior forward Martin Poznanovic (4.0 / Mathematics), Chadron State senior forward Josh Robinson (4.0 / Interdisciplinary Studies), Colorado Mesa redshirt junior forward Trevor Baskin (3.66 / Buinsess Administration), Colorado Mesa redshirt junior guard Levi Dombro (4.0 / Environmental Science), Colorado Mesa redshirt junior guard Reece Johnson (3.95 / Exercise Science), New Mexico Highlands sophomore forward Nathan Hasberry (3.94 / Business Administration), UCCS junior forward Mac Stodart (3.97 / Geography and Environmental Science) and Western Colorado junior guard Kade Juelfs (3.78 / Business Administration).
In addition to RMAC All-Academic First Team selections, the league also unveiled its 2023-24 RMAC Academic Honor Roll for men's basketball and the Pack had three players named the honor roll.
The Pack players named to the Academic Honor Roll were redshirt freshman guard
Landen Dvorsky (3.826 / Pre-Business), sophomore guard
Hilmir Hallgrimsson (3.950 / Pre-Business) and redshirt freshman forward
Andon Mindrup (3.591 / Pre-Business).
Requirements for a selection to the RMAC Academic Honor Roll are to have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or above and have completed two consecutive semesters at the institution.
The Pack men's basketball team closed out the 2023-24 season with a 14-15 overall record and finished tied for seventh in the RMAC with a 10-12 record and advanced to the RMAC Tournament for the first time since 2017. The Pack suffered a 102-98 loss to No. 2 seeded Fort Lewis in the quarterfinals of the 2024 RMAC Tournament.
