PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo baseball split Sunday's double-header at home vs. the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, dropping the first game and winning the second.
With the 1-1 Sunday outing, the Pack have now taken two out of three in the series and improve to 13-6 overall and 2-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play, while UCCS is now 4-15 overall and 1-2 in RMAC play.
UCCS took the first game on Sunday 6-5, while the Pack took game two 3-2. CSU Pueblo remains with the best overall record in the RMAC.
GAME ONE
Game one was one that got away from the Pack as they led both early in the game, and late in the game, but could not convert it into a win. The Pack threw the first punch in the first inning when senior outfielder
Christian Castaneda (El Paso, Texas/Otero JC) hit a sacrifice fly to score
Kade Snodgrass (Derby, Kan./Neosho County CC) for the first run of the game. First baseman
Brad Stone (Las Vegas, Nev./Southern Nevada) continued the first inning rally when he hit an RBI groundout.
UCCS answered in the fourth inning when Alec Gomez scored on a throwing error. The Mountain Lions tied it up in the fifth inning when Hayden Iverson doubled in a run down the left field line.
Iverson continued his hot bat in the sixth inning when he singled in two runs to center field to put UCCS up 4-2. The Pack answered in the bottom half of the inning and retook the lead 5-4 after Snodgrass singled up the middle, which was followed up by
Wyatt Reginato (Cottonwood, Calif./Folsom Lake) knocking in a run with a single to tie it. The Pack retook the lead when Castaneda hit a sac fly to right field.
Leading 5-4 going into the final inning of the game (seven inning game) the Pack struggled to hold on to the lead. Kit Wigington led off the inning with a solo homerun to tie the game, and on a play that appeared to be an inning ending double play, Aaron Brakel beat out a throw with the bases loaded for a fielder's choice RBI.
The Pack could not answer in the bottom half of the seventh inning and fell 6-5.
GAME TWO
A pitcher's duel was the story in game two.
Edwing Corrales (Delicias, Mexico/Otero JC) pitched a gem, as the veteran went six and a third, allowing just two runs on two hits to pick up the win.
UCCS scored first as Vander Hodges doubled to deep left center, scoring a run. Corrales did a fantastic job to get out of the inning just giving up one run.
The Pack answered in the bottom half of the fourth inning when the speedy
Jeremiah Sanchez (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo West) smoked a double to left center to score Stone. Junior shortstop
Rob Mansour continued the fourth inning rally with an RBI single up the middle to score Sanchez and give the Pack a 2-1 lead.
The Pack added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Castaneda scored on a wild pitch.
Things got dicey in the seventh inning as UCCS made the CSU Pueblo pitching staff sweat. Corrales gave up a run and exited after a gritty effort, giving up just two runs on two hits. Head Coach
Bobby Applegate called on the junior
Jacob Petersheim (Broadway, Va./Broadway) to get two big outs and he did just that to get out of a bases loaded jam and pick up the save.
UP NEXT FOR THE PACK
With the Pack up two games to one in the series, they go for the series win tomorrow with the first pitch starting at noon.
Cameron Saso (McKinleyville, Calif./Folsom Lake) will take the mound for the Pack.
