Baseball Explodes for Season High 26 Runs in Series Finale Home Win Over Colorado Christian

Borjas Hits for Cycle, Casteneda Hits Two Home Runs and Ties School Record With 8 RBI in Win

PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo baseball scored a season-high 26 runs that included five home runs and a cycle hit by junior rightfielder Elijah Borjas (Denver, Colo./Lakewood) en route to helping the ThunderWolves post a 26-8 victory here Sunday over Colorado Christian in non-conference action at Rawlings Field.

The victory extends the Pack's win streak to four straight games and moves their record to 9-2 on the season, while Colorado Christian falls to 1-12 on the year. The win also helped the Pack sweep the three-game weekend series from the Cougars as they won 9-1 on Friday at Rawlings Field and then posted a 19-12 comeback win on Saturday in Lakewood, Colo.

In the three game series, the Pack offense hit .414 as a team as they recorded 46 hits, scored 54 runs, hit 12 doubles, one home run and smashed 12 home runs, including three by senior leftfielder Christian Casteneda (El Paso, Texas/Otero JC) and posted an OPS for the weekend of 1.415 as a team. The Pack have now scored 121 runs in 11 games and are averaging 11 runs per game and have already hit 28 home runs and are hitting .339 as a team on the season.

On a windy day at Rawlings Field, the Pack scored at least three runs in five innings, including putting up nine runs on the scoreboard in the third inning when they sent 13 hitters to the plate. The Pack also scored five runs in the sixth and six runs in the seventh.

The 26 runs, which is tied for the fifth most runs scored in a game in school history, came off 16 hits as the Pack recorded eight extra-base hits, including five home runs, including two by Casteneda to push his season total to nine. The five homers are also tied for fifth most in a game in school history.

Along with Casteneda's two home run, he finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with four runs scored and a school record tying 8 RBI. Casteneda is now the fourth player in school history to record 8 RBI in a game and the first since Eric Bloom did it against CCU on April 10, 2009.

In addition to Casteneda, Borjas hit the cycle as he had a triple in the first inning, a double in the second inning, a 2-run homer in the third and completed the cycle with a single to lead off the fifth inning. On the day, he was 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and 6 RBI. Borjas now leads the team in batting average at .469 this season.

Sophomore designated hitter Jeremiah Sanchez (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo West) and junior third baseman Kysen Howard (Overland Park, Colo./Blue Valley Northwest) each had two hits in the game.

The Pack also drew 12 walks from five CCU pitchers and those 12 walks are tied for fifth-most in a game in school history.

The Pack got the scoring started in the bottom of the first as they plated three runs on just one hit, which was an RBI triple by Borjas and two CCU errors on the same play, which was a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of junior first baseman Brad Stone (Las Vegas, Nev./Southern Nevada).

CSU Pueblo pushed its lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the second thanks a bases-loaded 3-run double by Borjas off CCU starting hurler Saxton Sorenson.

The Pack offense then used six hits to score nine runs in the bottom of the third to take a 15-0 lead. The first run of the inning came off a sacrifice bunt by freshman catcher Jason Arriola (Riverside, Calif./Norco) and then Casteneda added four more run with his grand slam over the wall in left center. Two batters later, Borjas followed with a 2-run homer and then two more batters later, Sanchez delivered a 2-run homer over the wall in right.

CCU would finally dent the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth against Pack junior hurler Travis Farrell (Las Vegas, Nev./Otero JC), who started on the mound in Sunday's game. The big hit in the inning was a leadoff homer by Aaron Morgan. The Cougars scored three runs on three hits and a Pack error in the inning.

The Cougars would pull within 15-8 in the top of the sixth inning as they scored five runs on four hits in the inning and took advantage of a bases loaded walk issued to Gavin Acosta by junior hurler Caden English (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield), who relieved Farrell to start the sixth.

CSU Pueblo, though, responded in the bottom of the sixth with five more runs to push its lead to 20-8. Four of the five runs scored thanks to two-run homers in the inning by Casteneda and freshman centerfielder Logan Kelly (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Capistrano Valley Christian). The other run was scored on wild pitch by Chace Sorenson, who was the third Cougar pitcher in the game.

Leading 20-8, the Pack added six more runs to its tally in the bottom of the seventh. In the inning, junior second baseman Kolton Miller (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) brought home the first run on his RBI single to right. Casteneda then added two more runs on his 2-run double to right center, before Kelly was hit by a pitch by Jack Cazin with the bases loaded to score the fourth run of the inning. The other runs in the inning were brought home on an RBI single by senior designated hitter Edmund King (Imperial Beach, Calif./Southwestern) and a fielder's choice grounder by junior third baseman Cael Porter (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) to cap the scoring.

CCU got three hits and 3 RBI from Sawyer Shepherd, while Kade Carney and Luke Thompson each had two hits for the Cougars.

Farrell (1-1) earned the win as he pitched five innings and allowed six hits and three runs, while walking two and fanning seven. Four of the next five Pack pitchers after Farrell did not allow any runs and combined to record three strikeouts and one walk. English was other Pack pitcher to allow runs in the game as he faced just five batters and did not record an out as he allowed three hits and five runs and walked two.

Sorenson took the loss for the Cougars as he tossed 2.1 innings and allowed five hits and 11 runs (10 earned), while walking five and striking out four.

The teams combined for seven errors in the game as the Pack had four and CCU recorded three. CCU also turned three double plays to one for the Pack.

CSU Pueblo will look to make it five straight wins as they play host to St. Cloud State for an 11 a.m. game on Monday, Feb. 26 at Rawlings Field. St. Cloud State (6-5) took two of three games this weekend at UCCS. Including scoring 28 runs in sweeping a doubleheader on Sunday. The Huskies won the first game, 12-8 and then collected a 16-5 win in the nightcap.
