PUEBLO, Colo. (February 14, 2024) - The Colorado State University Pueblo softball team opened play at home for the first time this season and welcomed Northwest Oklahoma State to town for a nonconference doubleheader and earned a split on Wednesday at Rawlings Sports Complex.
Marissa Robertson (So., Rocklin, Calif.) picked up her first win of the season in the circle, and had a stellar outing in the circle for the ThunderWolves in game two, and shut out NWOSU 1-0 after the Pack fell 5-1 in the first game.
In the second game, Robertson went the distance and scattered six hits and struck out four and improved her record to 1-2 on the season.
The ThunderWolves totaled just three hits in the game and was able to score the only run of the game with one out in the fourth inning when
Caitlyn Cole (So., Merced, Calif.) was hit by pitch and moved into scoring position on a groundout on the right side.
Cole would come around to score in the next at-bat, an
Ashley Tosh (Jr., Fremont, Calif.) RBI-double to left center for the 1-0 lead.
CSU Pueblo's only two hits came in the first and fifth innings, respectively.
Robertson retired the side in order during four innings and in the seventh, a single to left field put the tying run on base before Robertson induced back-to-back outs to complete the win.
During the series opener, the Rangers got on the board with one run in the first inning on two hits and one Pack defensive error.
Cole hit a double to center field in the home half of the first but was left stranded.
The next Pack base runner was in the bottom of the third inning when
Raelynn Rogers (Jr., Surprise, Ariz.) reached safely on a hit to the pitcher and after stealing second base, was left in scoring position after a pop out on the infield.
Following a 1-2-3 fourth inning for both teams, NWOSU hit a two-run home run to go ahead 3-0 entering the ThunderWolves half of the fifth.
In the inning,
Madelyn Huerta (So., Azusa, Calif.) help to get the ThunderWolves on the board and hit a one-out double to right center and she would steal third base before scoring on a RBI-single hit by
Darleen Falcon (So., Moreno Valley, Calif.).
Falcon advanced to third in the next at-bat, a
Tori Cordova (Jr., Pueblo West, Colo.) single on the infield. After Cordova stole second base and put two runners in scoring position.
Rogers came up to the plate and an unlucky line drive double play hit to third resulted in Falcon getting doubled up to end the scoring threat.
The Rangers added two more runs in the next inning and the ThunderWolves went retired in order over the last two innings, finishing the game at 5-1 in favor of NWOSU.
McKenna James (So., Windsor, Colo.) threw 7.0 innings and allowed five runs and two earned. She finished with five strikeouts and five walks allowed.
CSU Pueblo (2-9) will open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on the road at Regis starting Saturday in Denver.
