GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The Colorado State University Pueblo Women's Basketball Team fell on Wednesday night to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponent Colorado Mesa 70-52 in a non-conference match-up.
With the loss, the ThunderWolves fall to 2-3 on the young season, while the Mavericks improve to 4-1 on the season.
There was not a scorigami on Wednesday evening, but possibly the second closest thing to it as both teams scored the exact same amount of points in each quarter except the second. 15-15, 28-10, 13-13, 14-14.Â
Alisha Little (Aurora, Colo./Northern Colorado), who is coming off RMAC Offensive and Defensive player of the week, had another big night for the Pack on both ends, scoring 22 points, pulling down six boards, blocking three shots, and recording four steals.Â
Tomia Johnson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Florida Gulf Coast) appeared to be getting back into game shape (missed the first two games of the season), as the senior point guard had a good night on both ends, recording 11 points, seven assists, and three steals.
Riley Hayes led the way for the Mavs with 18 points on the evening. 2023-24 RMAC Player of the Year Olivia Reed was held to just 12 points on 6-10 shooting.
The Pack did a good job on the defensive end, forcing Colorado Mesa to 22 turnovers on the night, but were outrebounded 40-18.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pack started off hot, taking an early 9-7 lead after buckets from Little,
Shamahra Henderson (Denver, Colo./Cowley County CC), and
Brynae Stewart (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek).Â
CSU Pueblo fell down 15-11, but went on a 4-0 run to end the quarter, with a couple of buckets from Little and Henderson, and just like that the score was 15-15 after one.
Landri Hudson (Aurora, Colo./Wyoming) gave the ThunderWolves the lead to start the second quarter at 17-15, but that was short lived as Mesa put their foot on the gas, going on a 28-10 run to end the quarter, taking a big 43-25 lead into the break.
The ThunderWolves battled out the gates in the second half, cutting the lead back down to 10, opening on a 10-2 run to start the third quarter, with buckets from Johnson, Henderson, and Stewart, prompting the Mavs to take a timeout.
Colorado Mesa came out of the timeout and responded, opening with a 10-0 run to extend their lead back to 20 at 55-35.Â
The Pack battled in the fourth quarter, going toe to toe with the Mavs, but just could not cut into the lead enough, eventually dropping the game 70-52.
