GOLDEN, Colo. (October 6, 2024) - The No. 20 ranked Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer team went on the road and beat Colorado School of Mines 2-1 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference clash at Stermole Stadium.
Both of the ThunderWolves captains accounted for the two goals in the game including a goal fromÂ
Shjon Andrews (Gr., Longmont, Colo.) in the 31st minute and penalty goal scored fromÂ
Caio Oliveira (Sr., Espigao d'Oeste, Brazil) in the 62nd minute powered the Pack to victory.
"Top performance from the squad today. (We) overcame some adversity and put in a great effort," said CSU Pueblo Head Coach
Oliver Twelvetrees. "Caio was simply unplayable, with him and
Tobi Osifodunrin (Sr., Brighton, Colo.) breaking them down consistently. Happy to be 2-0 in RMAC play and looking forward to some rest this week before getting ready for our next match."
In the game, CSU Pueblo dominated offensively and recorded 19 shots, including ten landing on frame. Oliveira was a menace all day and registered a season-high eight shots and five SOG.
Osifodunrin and
Jose Bustamante (Jr., Davie, Fla.) both fired two shots.
At the net,
Ruben Volkert (Gr., Baden-Württemberg, Germany) played well and made one save in full minutes of action. He faced seven shots and three SOG.
In the first half, CSU Pueblo was able to get on the board on a throw in ball sent in from
Ignatius DeMark (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.) and Andrews scored from the far side of the 6-yard box. It is Andrews' fourth goal this season.
A short five minutes later, Mines was able to get on the board after a turnover resulted in a shot fired into the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1.
At the break, the Pack led 11-2 in shots and had earned three corner kicks.
Entering the second half, CSU Pueblo continued to pressure the Orediggers and made eight additional shots in the period.
In the 62nd minute, Oliveira stepped in after a penalty was called against Mines and Oliveira was able to strike the back of the net to put the ThunderWolves ahead 2-1. Oliveira is now 4-for-4 on the season in PKs and he now has six goals scored this year.
Over the last nearly 28 minutes, the Pack defense held Mines to five shots and just two SOG until the final buzzer sounded.
CSU Pueblo (7-2-1, 2-0-0 RMAC) will have a full week off and will return to action next Sunday and host Colorado Christian for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
