GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (October 27, 2024) - The No. 25 ranked Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer team finished an unbeaten week on the road following a 2-1 win at Colorado Mesa on Sunday at Community Hospital Unity Field.
With the win, CSU Pueblo improves to 10-3-1 overall and 5-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The ThunderWolves currently have 18 conference points and are in second place in the standings with three games to go in the regular season.
In the match,
Jose Bustamante (Jr., Davie, Fla.) and
Tobi Osifodunrin (Sr., Brighton, Colo.) each scored goals in the first half, along with strong play by the defense, carried the ThunderWolves to the win.
Alon Firdman (Sr., Barcelona, Spain),
Ignatius DeMark (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.) and
Caio Oliveira (Sr., Espigao d'Oeste, Brazil) all earned assists in the game.
"Top performance and effort today," said CSU Pueblo Head Coach
Oliver Twelvetrees. "Fantastic to see our strikers Jose and Tobi get the goals. Alon was immense again with him and Iggy and Caio adding another assist. We needed these two wins this weekend and fought together to get them. All eyes on Regis now."
Colorado Mesa scored the first goal of the game in the 21st minute when Manuel Ponce Casas snuck behind the defense and found the back of the net for the early lead.
The Pack responded and carried possession into the offensive zone and fired a flurry of shots at the CMU defense.
The ThunderWolves outshot the Mavericks by a 15-5 clip and the Pack recorded six SOG.
Jack Pascoe (Sr., Barry, Wales, England) led all players with four shots and one landing on frame. Bustamante registered multiple SOG.
At intermission, CSU Pueblo's offense had ten chances at the net and earned four corners against none by CMU.
In the second half, strong play at midfield from Oliveira and
Luke Smith (Sr., Bolton, England) helped lead the defense in holding CMU to four shots in the second half and three corners.
At the net, Pack goalkeeper
Ruben Volkert (Gr., Baden-Württemberg, Germany) gave up one goal and made three saves including a huge save with just over 12 minutes left in the game to keep the Mavericks out of the net.
CSU Pueblo will return home and conclude the home portion of the regular season starting Thursday against current RMAC leader Regis University. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
The weekend will conclude on Sunday for Senior Day and host South Dakota Mines starting at Noon. The Pack will recognize departing players who are ending their collegiate careers with a post game ceremony.
