ThunderWolves score 2-1 win over Newman

PUEBLO, Colo. (September 8, 2023) - The Colorado State University Pueblo women's soccer team scored its first win of the season after defeating Newman 2-1 on Friday at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.

The ThunderWolves received goals from Ashley Bennett (So., Lakeville, Minn.) and Cortney Cowles (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.).

From the onset, CSU Pueblo was aggressive offensively and fired 19 shots against four allowed to Newman. Bennett and Cowles led all players with four shots and Carlia Johnson (Jr., The Valley, Anguilla) finished with three shots.

In the match, the Pack dominated offensively and the play at midfield was a key factor in keeping the Jets grounded.

The visitors managed to get on the board during the 30th minute after a lucky bounce went in favor of Newman for a 1-0 lead.

The ThunderWolves went into halftime trailing and to start the second half, the Pack offense continued to pressure the ball which resulted in the home team gaining possession in Newman territory.

Bennett had several chances at the net and was able to convert from wide right of the net, hitting the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

In the period, CSU Pueblo recorded eleven shots and earned six corners. On the defensive side, the Pack limited the Jets to one shot.

The ThunderWolves broke the tie during the 66th minute when Cameron Farthing (So., Coventry, England) drove the ball down field and found Cowles who was able to finish and score the go-ahead goal. It is Cowles' second goal in as many games.

Pack goalkeeper Nicole Genis (Sr., San Jose, Costa Rica) finished with one save against four shots.

CSU Pueblo (1-0-2) returns to the pitch on Sunday and battles Cal State San Bernardino starting at 1 p.m. at Gonzales Stadium.
