DALLAS, Tex. (August 31, 2023) - No. 2 Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer used its high-powered offense and scored three goals in the second half to defeat Dallas Baptist 3-2 in the season opener for both teams.
In the match, CSU Pueblo dominated offensively and fired off 15 shots and defensively, the Pack held the Patriots to only three shots.
DBU got on the board first when a penalty kick was awarded against the ThunderWolves and DBU's Peyton Voelker converted his attempt and put the home team ahead 1-0 in the 13th minute.
The ThunderWolves were able to come together and fire off four shots and earned all four of their corners in the first half.
CSU Pueblo's offense was ignited in a big way to start the second period when 2022 All-AmericanÂ
Gabriel Campora (Sr., Saltillo, Mexico) was able to get around the defense and score his, and the Pack's first goal of the season in the 49th minute.
Just over nine minutes later, the Pack again carried possession deep in Patriots territory and
Caio Oliveira (Sr., Espigao d'Oeste, Brazil) hit a cross shot that was deflected off a flurry of players and went wide of the net.
Campora gathered the ball on the right side of the net and centered a pass and allowedÂ
Reggie Nicolas (Sr., Palm Bay, Fla.) to body past the defense and get the ball past the DBU goalkeeper.
During the 71st minute, another 2022 Pack All-American,
Shjon Andrews (Sr., Longmont, Colo.) took a pass from
Ignatius DeMark (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.) and scored his first goal of the season.
The ThunderWolves recorded eleven shots in the second period and were led by
Ricardo Schroeder Jr. (Sr., Parana, Brazil) with four shots in the match.
In the net for the first time of his career,
Ruben Volkert (Fr., Baden-Württemberg, Germany) allowed two goals and made one save to pick up the win.
"It was great to get the win. It was a very exciting match and the lads showed their character to come back from going down 1-0 early on the penalty," said Pack Head Coach
Oliver Twelvetrees. "We played some very good football at times during the game but were not able to sustain it, which led to far too many counter attacks."
He added,"DBU showed some real quality, putting us under real pressure for spells and the atmosphere on opening night was amazing for them. We certainly need to continue to improve and this win will help."
CSU Pueblo (1-0-0) returns to action on Saturday when they travel to play at University of Texas at Tyler. Kickoff is set for Noon (MT) in Tyler, Tex.
