Sam Batey Sr. Legacy Golf Tournament Produces More Birdies Than Bogeys

Tournament Nets $10,000 for CSU Pueblo Foundation for Sam Batey Sr. Legacy Scholarship

DENVER, Colo. (July 28, 2023) - On a near-perfect day to play a round of golf, 72 players made up 18 foursomes that competed in the inaugural Sam Batey Sr. Legacy Golf Tournament at Denver City Park Golf Course.

With the Colorado capital city skyline and the mountains of the Centennial State in the background, the morning event concluded with junior women's basketball player Alisha Davis (Denver, Colo./University of Northern Colorado) being named at an early afternoon luncheon as the first recipient of the Sam Batey Sr. Legacy Scholarship at Colorado State University Pueblo.Alisha Davis Batey Scholarship Recipient

With the passing of Batey in mid-July 2021, his family of wife Barbara and children Sam Jr. and Dana created the endowed scholarship in Sam's name with the recipient being chose from a candidate pool of student-athletes at CSU Pueblo that are from the Denver metro area and compete in basketball, golf, lacrosse or tennis.

At Friday's event, Todd Kelly from the CSU Pueblo Foundation and John Wristen from CSU Pueblo Athletics received a $10,000 check from the Batey Family (Dana, Barbara and Sam Jr.) to support the Sam Batey Sr. Legacy Scholarship.

Davis, who was picked from a list of six deserving Pack student-athletes, attended the luncheon and gave a "moving" speech after being named the recipient of the Sam Batey Sr. Legacy Scholarship. Davis is returning to competition this season after missing the 2022-2023 campaign due to giving birth to her daughter Genesis in late February.  With two seasons of eligibility remaining, Davis has a 3.2 grade-point average and is a nursing major at CSU Pueblo.

Davis earned All-American mention during her first campaign in 2021-22 with the ThunderWolves as she was also honored as a first-team Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection in leading the Pack to a 23-9 record, a second-place finish during the league's regular- and post-season, a berth in the NCAA Division II Championships.

Playing 25 games during the 2021-22 season, Davis led CSU Pueblo in scoring, rebounding, shot blocking and field goal percentage.  She led the RMAC in shots blocked with 74, the fourth-most in program history.

Averaging 29.5 minutes a game in 2021-2022, Davis finished second in the RMAC in rebounding (7.7 per game) and field goal percentage (47.3 percent), fifth in scoring (16.6), ninth in steals (2.0) and 11th in free throw percentage (72.9 percent).

With five double-doubles in her first season with the Pack, Davis' best games were 25 points at Black Hills State, 13 rebounds and eight blocks at home against Fort Lewis, and seven steals versus Western Colorado at Massari Arena.

In 82 career collegiate games, including 56 contests at Northern Colorado covering two seasons (2019-21), Davis has scored 1,234 points (15.5 a game), grabbed 669 rebounds (8.2), blocked 204 shots and been credited with 140 steals.  She has 26 career double-doubles while shooting 50.1 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from the free throw line.

At Grandview High, Davis' teams won two state titles and had one runner-up finish during her career. She was All-State in basketball and won a State high jump title in track and field as a senior.

The daughter of Andra and Monique Davis, she has two younger sisters (Amber and Andrea). Her father played 10 seasons in the NFL (Cleveland, 2002-2008, Denver 2009 and Buffalo, 2010-2011).

As for the golf tournament, two foursomes with CSU Pueblo tied for the top prize with the winning team being decided by seeing who posted the best scores on the toughest holes at the par 70, 5,144-yard Denver City Park layout.  Here are the final scores with the list of team members.
