CSU Pueblo Athletics Holds Annual Wolfies Student-Athlete Award Ceremony

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo Department of Athletics honored its student-athletes and doled out awards for the 2022-23 school year at the 2023 Wolfies, the department's annual student-athlete awards banquet, which was held here Tuesday evening in the Occhiato Student Center Ballroom in front of nearly 600 people. The Wolfies Awards Banquet was sponsored by Parkview Health System.

ThunderWolves coaches and administrators recognized nearly 80 student-athletes and all 21 athletic teams and handed out awards to nearly 25 student-athletes. The award winners were nominated by the athletic department's SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) and voted on the department's administration staff.

Along with handing the annual student-athlete awards, CSU Pueblo Vice President for Athletics and Strategic Partnerships Dr. Paul Plinske also recognized the departments athletic accomplishments during the 2022-23 school year and also gave special recognition to the department's individual and team Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Champions, the department's All-Americans, Academic All-Americans and National runners-up  - men's soccer team, Helen Braybrook, women's indoor track (800 meters) and Katherine Higgins, women's indoor track (shot put). Dr. Plinske also recognized the school's RMAC and National Players of the Week, the school's All-Conference and Academic All-Conference honorees and student-athletes that set school records during the school year.

The program began with an introduction by Dr. Plinske, who served as the banquet's emcee. Dr. Plinske gave recognition to Parkview and also introduced members of the University Administration in attendance, along with the athletic department's head coaches and administrative team.

Following that, CSU Pueblo President Dr. Timothy Mottet spoke and then Dr. Plinske presented the Athletic Director Award of Excellence to Dr. Lucas King, who is an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist at Parkview Health System.

After Dr. Plinske recognized the athletic department's Athletes/Players of the Week, All-Conference and All-Academic honorees and school record holders from this year, the first award was handed out by Chance Rodriguez, who announced the winners of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA Award) Integrity Award.

The winners of that award were sophomore football player Carter Closson (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) and graduate student women's basketball player Morgan Dial (Denver City, Texas/Western Texas College). The other nominees for the award were – men's soccer player Ignatius DeMark (Phoenix, Ariz.), football player Wilde Germano (Hilo, Hawai'i/Kamehameha), women's softball player Caitlyn Cole (Merced, Calif./Stone Ridge Christian) and track and field athlete Mary Scoggins (Rangely, Colo./Rangley).

Following the FCA Integrity Award, Rodriguez delivered the invocation and the assembled crowd ate dinner.

After the conclusion of dinner, the program continued with Dr. Plinske recognizing the department's sports medicine and sports performance staff. Following that, he gave special recognition to the school's RMAC Champions (individual and team), All-Americans, Academic All-Americans and the national runners-up.

Senior volleyball player Hannah Delor (Marysville, Mich./Urbana), who serves as the CSU Pueblo SAAC President spoke and after she spoke, Dr. Plinske began announcing the rest of the award winners for 2022-23 school year.

  • Tundra Spirit of the Pack Award (male/female) – presented by Carol and Mark Rickman
    • Winner (Male): senior track and field athlete Nate Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./Widefield)
    • Winner (Female): senior volleyball player Hannah Delor (Marysville, Mich./Urbana)
       
  • Highest Team Cumulative GPA Award (male/female) – presented by Dr. Chad Kinney
    • Winner (Male Team): Men's Cross Country (3.465 GPA)
      • Other nominees: Men's Golf and Men's Track and Field
    • Co-Winners (Female Team): Women's Cross Country (3.746 GPA) and Women's Volleyball (3.741 GPA)  
      • Other nominees: Women's Track and Field
         
  • Outstanding Team Community Service Award (male/female) – presented by Mannie Reinsch
    • Winner (Male Team): Baseball
      • Other nominees: Men's Cheerleading, soccer and wrestling
    • Winner (Female Team): Softball
      • Other nominees: Women's cheerleading, dance team and basketball
         
  • Comeback Award (male/female)presented by Kelly Perry
  • Sportsmanship Award (male/female) – presented by Jenna McKinley
  • Outstanding Male and Female Athlete of the Year Awardpresented by Dr. Lucas King
  • Best Male and Female Team Performance Award – presented by Dr. Tim Mottet
    • Male Team of the Year: Men's Soccer (NCAA Division II national runners-up)
      • Other nominees: Football (NCAA Playoffs), Golf (RMAC Champions, NCAA Regional qualifier) and Track and Field (Top 10 finish at NCAA Indoor Nationals, third place finish at RMAC Outdoor Championships)
    • Female Team of the Year: Cross Country (school-best sixth place finish at NCAA National Championships)
      • Other nominees: Track & Field (Tied for 12th at NCAA Indoor Nationals), Volleyball (NCAA Regional participant) and Golf (RMAC Champions and NCAA Regional participant)
Following the presentation of the all the awards, all graduating seniors with no eligibility remaining gathered up front for a 2022-23 Senior group photo.
