ThunderWolves complete sweep of Black Hills State

PUEBLO, Colo. (April 24, 2023) - The Colorado State University Pueblo softball squad picked up its sixth win in a row and completed a four-game series sweep of Black Hills State following a pair of wins 9-8 (8 inn.) and 5-3 on Monday at Rawlings Sports Complex.

On the day, Madelyn Huerta (Fr., Azusa, Calif.) went 6-for-6 at the plate and hit her third home run of the weekend, including a double, four runs and 5 RBI.

In the circle, Jacelynn Trujillo (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) picked up her third win of the series after tossing a complete game and allowed three runs and two earned on eight hits along with two strikeouts.

In the first game Monday, BHSU jumped to a 7-0 lead after the first inning, chasing Pack starting pitcher Marissa Robertson (Fr., Rocklin, Calif.) before the dust settled and Lucy Carney (So., Lakewood, Colo.) was able to pitch herself out of the jam.

During the bottom of the first, CSU Pueblo got two runs back on a two-run blast hit by Huerta on the first pitch she seen.

The ThunderWolves chipped away at the lead and scored two more runs in the third thanks to a RBI-single from Huerta and an RBI-double hit by Darleen Falcon (Fr., Moreno Valley, Calif.), bringing the score to 7-4 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.

In the fifth inning, an infield single up the middle hit by Falcon brought the ThunderWolves to within two runs, 7-5.

After a scoreless sixth inning and top half of the seventh, CSU Pueblo scored the tying runs on a two-run triple hit by Ashley Tosh (So., Fremont, Calif.).

The Yellow Jackets to an 8-7 lead in extra innings before the Pack responded and scored the tying and game-winning run on aggressive base running.

Marika Spector (Jr., Wimberley, Tex.) caused the defense to commit a throwing error which allowed her to race across home plate with the tying run.

Later in the inning, Caitlyn Cole (Fr., Merced, Calif.) reached on a fielder's choice and the fast running by Tori Cordova (So., Pueblo West, Colo.) scored the winning run.

Carney gets the win and improves her record to 8-9 on the year.

In the series finale, Tosh came through with an RBI-groundout to put the Pack on top early, 1-0.

BHSU took a 2-1 lead after hitting a two-run double down the right field line.

The ThunderWolves responded in their half of the third inning when Huerta hit an RBI-double followed by an RBI-groundout hit by Falcon to put the Pack ahead 3-2.

The Pack scored single runs in the fourth and fifth inning on a sac bunt from Raelynn Rogers (So., Surprise, Ariz.) and another RBI-single by Huerta.

The Yellow Jackets scored the third run of the game in the fifth inning on a single to right field. The visitors would get the tying run to the plate in each of the sixth and seventh innings but effective pitching by Trujillo helped to avoid any damage.

Trujillo is now 9-10 on the year.

CSU Pueblo (20-27, 15-23 RMAC) next will hit the road and play the regular season finale at Chadron State. The four-game series is slated to begin Thursday in Chadron, Nebraska.
