CSU Pueblo shines on Senior Day

PUEBLO, Colo. (April 23, 2023) - The Colorado State University Pueblo softball team celebrated Senior Day in a big way, winning both games of a doubleheader against Black Hills State, Sunday at Rawlings Sports Complex.

CSU Pueblo Head Coach Bianca Duran and her staff and players honored three seniors who are playing their final home games with the Pack. Jill Bishop (Brighton, Colo.), Seaerra Fuentes Arellano (Ewa Beach, Hawai'i) and Anna Novak-Palomar (Pueblo, Colo.) each were recognized after the doubleheader.

The ThunderWolves received stellar pitching all day from Jacelynn Trujillo (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) who tossed 12.0 innings, gave up six hits and one run. She fanned eight Yellow Jacket players in two games and improves her record to 8-10 on the year.

Offensively, Madelyn Huerta (Fr., Azusa, Calif.) finished 4-for-6 (.667 avg.) at the dish and smacked a pair of home runs, scored three runs and added four RBI for the ThunderWolves.

Darleen Falcon (Fr., Moreno Valley, Calif.) ended with two hits in the two games. Falcon connected on a 2-run double in the sixth inning of game one to give the Pack some insurance runs.

In game one, Trujillo threw a complete game and gave up two singles and finished with six strikeouts. She faced little traffic and left five runners on base and was able to pitch herself out of any jams.

The Pack got on the board during the second inning on a solo shot from Huerta.

CSU Pueblo went ahead 3-0 after the double hit by Falcon.

Trujillo finished the game with a 1-2-3 seventh including her eighth strikeout of the game.

In the second game, the ThunderWolves had to claw their way back into the game after going down 4-0 in the third inning. BHSU score four runs on five hits including a HR, a double, and two RBI-singles.

Starting in the circle for the Pack, Lucy Carney (So., Lakewood, Colo.) gave up three runs on four hits before Trujillo was called on in relief.

The Pack got one run back in the next half inning on an RBI-single from Falcon.

After a quick top of the fourth, CSU Pueblo went back on offense and tied the game at 4-4 after they put up three runs on three hits, highlighted by the two-run blast from Huerta.

Caitlyn Cole (Fr., Merced, Calif.) earned a sac groundout in the inning for the Pack.

The duo of Huerta-Cole came up big again in the sixth inning with RBI hits from them both and take a 6-4 lead.

In their last at bat, BHSU got the tying run to the plate with two outs but the game ended on a groundout on the infield.

Trujillo earned the win after going five innings, allowed one run and four hits along with two strikeouts.

CSU Pueblo (18-27, 13-23 RMAC) will finish the series tomorrow with another doubleheader scheduled for 11 a.m. at Rawlings Sports Complex.
