Baseball Scores 20 Runs in 20-2 Series Finale Run-Ruled Win at Adams State

Casteneda Hits Two Home Runs Against Grizzlies

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo baseball recorded 18 hits and scored 20 runs here in Sunday's 20-2 run-ruled series finale win against Adams State in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at the ASU Baseball Field.

With the win, the ThunderWolves and the Grizzlies split the four-game series as the Pack improved to  18-27 overall and 14-14 in the RMAC, while Adams State falls to 12-29 overall and 6-18 in the league.

Along with recording 18 hits and 20 runs in Sunday's series finale, the Pack scored three or more runs in four of the seven innings that were played, including scoring seven runs in the second inning and adding five runs in the sixth inning.

All nine of the Pack's starters recorded at least one hit and scored at least one run in the game, including redshirt senior shortstop Trey Vasquez (Greeley, Colo./Dodge City CC) going 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs. Along with Vasquez, senior first baseman Reggie Williams (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) had two hits and 3 RBI, while sophomore third baseman Kysen Howard (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest), redshirt freshman third baseman Cael Porter (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa), junior catcher Brady Prewitt (Raytown, Mo./Iowa Western CC) and junior leftfielder Christian Casteneda (El Paso, Texas/Otero JC) each had two hits. Casteneda also scored two runs and had 3 RBI as he hit two home runs in the game.

The Pack got the scoring started in the top of the second inning as junior designated hitter Edmund King (Imperial Beach, Calif./Southwestern) recorded a two-run double to left center to take a 2-0 lead. The lead grew to 4-0 later in inning on a 2-run single by Williams, while Howard made it 5-0 with his RBI single to left center. The scoring was completed on a 2-run homer by Casteneda.

CSU Pueblo pushed in front 10-0 on the top of the third inning thanks to a 2-run triple to left center by redshirt junior second baseman Cole Knightley (Solvang, Calif./Santa Ynez) and an RBI ground out by Williams.

Casteneda's second homer of the game, a solo shot over the fence in left, gave the Pack an 11-0 lead in the fourth inning. The homer was Casteneda's team-leading ninth of the season.

In the fifth the Pack pushed its lead to 15-0 as they used two hits, an ASU error, a walk, and sacrifice fly to score four runs with three of the four runs scoring on an bases loaded double to left center by Prewitt. The fourth run came home on a sacrifice fly by King.

The Pack pushed its lead to 20-0 in the top of the sixth inning as they scored five runs on three hits. In the inning, Porter got the scoring started on his RBI single to left center, before senior leftfielder Zac Hanenberg (Cañon City, Colo./ Cañon City) made it 17-0 on his sacrifice fly and later in the inning with bases loaded, junior Jeremiah Mares (Albuquerque, N.M./Cibola) delivered a bases clearing pinch-hit 3-run double to right field.

The Grizzlies would finally dent the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth off redshirt freshman hurler Caden English (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield), who replaced junior starter Tyler Curtis (Las Vegas, Nev./Southern Idaho), who pitched five shutout innings in his 11th start of the season. In the inning, Mike Bathauer and Ayden Tausher each hit run scoring RBI singles.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Grizzlies put two runners on base with no outs, before sophomore Jacob Petersheim (Broadway, Va./Broadway) would battle back to retire the next three hitters in order, including recording two strikeouts to complete the Pack's victory.

ASU had nine hits in the series finale with Joseph Raker recording two of those nine hits.

Curtis (4-2) allowed just four hits and no runs, while walking two and striking out four in his 53-pitch outing. Petersheim would toss the final 1.2 innings and allow one hit and no runs, while walking one and striking out two.

Kamden Kautz (2-5) took the loss for the Grizzlies as he pitched 1.1 innings and allowed seven hits and six runs (six earned), while walking one and striking out one.
