DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado State University Pueblo baseball used a strong starting pitching performance from junior
Tyler Curtis (Las Vegas, Nev./Southern Idaho) and an offense that scored in six of nine innings en route to posting an 11-4 win over Regis on the second day of the weekend pod against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schools at Regis Baseball Field.
With the win, the ThunderWolves' snap its four game losing skid and improve to 2-11 overall on the season, while Regis falls to 8-9 on the season. The Pack will conclude the weekend RMAC pod with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, March 5 at Rawlings Field in Pueblo against 13th-ranked Metro State.
Curtis (1-1) picked up his first win of the season seven innings and allowed just five hits and three runs (one earned run), while walking two and striking out three. Sophomore
Travis Farrell (Las Vegas, Nev./Otero JC) pitched the final two innings as he allowed three hits and one run, while striking out two and walking none.
Curtis got some help in Saturday's game for his offense as the Pack recorded 13 hits and scored 11 runs, which was one run shy of its season high of 12 runs last weekend against West Texas A&M.
The top four hitters in the CSU Pueblo line-up did a majority of the damage in Saturday's game as those four hitters went a combined 10-for-20 with nine runs scored, 4 RBI, three walks and two stolen bases.
Senior centerfielder
Noah Hennings (Draper, Utah/Southern Idaho), the No. 2 hitter and junior designated hitter
Christian Casteneda (El Paso, Texas/Otero JC), the No. 4 hitter, each had three hits and scored three runs each, while senior first baseman
Reggie Williams (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County), who is the lead-off hitter, and junior catcher
Brady Prewitt (Raytown, Mo./Iowa Western CC) each had two hits and scored a total of three runs in the win. For Williams, he extended his hit streak to nine straight game and his reached base streak to 13 straight games.
The Pack jumped in front 1-0 in the top of the first as Hennings reached on a one-out single to left, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by Regis catcher Adam Paniagua and scored the first run on an RBI single to right center by Prewitt.
Regis, though, would strike for three runs in the bottom of the second thanks to two hits and two Pack errors to take a 3-1 lead. Two of the three runs in the inning were unearned thanks to the errors on redshirt senior shortstop
Trey Vasquez (Greeley, Colo./Dodge City CC) and sophomore leftfielder
Kysen Howard (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest).
The Pack got one of the those runs back in the top of the third thanks to a lead-off single by Williams and three walks issued by Regis starting pitcher Ryan Garcia. The third walk, which was a bases loaded one drawn by Howard, allowed Williams to score the Pack's second run of the game to pull within 3-2.
In the top of the fifth inning, a doubles by Casteneda a hit batsman, a wild pitch and a RBI on a pinch hit fielder's choice off the bat of junior
Elijah Borjas (Denver, Colo./Lakewood) tied the game at 3-all. For the second time in the game, though, the Pack would leave the bases loaded. They also left the bases loaded in the third inning.
With the game tied at 3 heading into the sixth inning, the Pack offense came alive as they took advantage of the Rangers' bullpen as Regis replaced Garcia on the mound to open the inning. The Pack would score five runs on two hits and two Regis errors to retake the lead at 8-3. The first run of the inning came on a one-out solo home run over the wall in right center from Hennings to give the Pack a 4-3 lead. The Pack would add a second run on an RBI single to center by Howard and then scored two runs when redshirt junior third baseman
Cole Knightley (Solvang, Calif./Santa Ynez) reached on a two-base error by Regis third baseman Colten Chase and the final run came home on an RBI groundout by Borjas.
The Pack added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI single by Vasquez, which came two batters after Casteneda led off the inning with a single. Vasquez's single made the score 9-3.
CSU Pueblo, though, was not done scoring as they used four hits and two Regis errors in the ninth to add two runs to its total and push its lead to 11-3. In the inning, Williams led off with a single, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Hennings. Hennings would eventually reach third thanks to error by Regis pitcher Cam Bushnell and would score on a single to center by Prewitt. The Pack would eventually load the bases with one out in the inning against reliever Garrett Dudley, but Dudley got out of the jam by getting Vasquez to line into a double play and then he stuck out Knightley looking to end the inning.
The Rangers would get to Farrell in the ninth thanks to a hit batsman and an RBI double off the bat of Zach Daudet to drop the Pack's lead to 12-4. Farrell, though, regrouped and end the game by striking out Matt Marlow looking.
Regis had eight hits in the game, including two from Paniagua.
Both teams combined for eight errors in the game as Regis had five that led to six unearned runs, while the Pack committed three errors that led to two unearned runs.
The Pack two two double plays and left 14 runners on base, while Regis had one double play and stranded eight runners on base.
Dom Ramil (0-2), who was the first of six relievers used by Regis on the game, took the loss as he tossed 0.1 innings and allowed one hit, three runs (one earned run), while walking one and fanning none.
Garcia tossed five innings in his start and allowed four hits and three runs (two earned runs), while walking six and fanning three. For the day, Regis walked Pack hitters a total of eight times with Knightley drawing two of those eight walks.
