PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo Baseball saw its season-high seven-game win streak snapped here on a blustery and chilly Saturday afternoon as the ThunderWolves fell 7-4 to Colorado School of Mines in the second of the team's four game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series at Rawlings Field.
Saturday's game was expected to be a doubleheader, but with a forecast that called for wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour, plus temperatures in the upper 30's, it was decided to play Sunday's single game on Saturday and push the doubleheader to Sunday, March 26 at 12 p.m. to conclude the four-game RMAC series.
With the setback, CSU Pueblo falls to 11-14 overall and 8-2 in the RMAC, while Mines improves to 8-14 overall and 4-6 in the RMAC.
The Pack struggled with runners on base in Saturday's game as they stranded 11 and were held to just seven hits, which snapped a streak of four game streak of double-digit hits for the Pack. The Pack defense also committed three errors on the day.
Junior designated hitter
Christian Casteneda (El Paso, Texas/Otero JC) and sophomore third baseman
Kysen Howard (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) each had two hits in the game. The two hits for Casteneda helped extend his hit streak to 16 consecutive games.
The wind played an assist in the Orediggers' first run in the top of the first as Mason Andrews hit a fly ball to center, but the wind caused CSU Pueblo freshman rightfielder
Jeremiah Sanchez (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo West) to lose sight of the ball and it dropped in for a triple with one out. The next Mines hitter, Garret Nielsen brought home Andrews on his RBI single to left.
CSU Pueblo would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third thanks to one hit, an error, a balk and a wild pitch to take a 3-1 lead. In the inning, junior catcher
Brady Prewitt (Raytown, Mo./Iowa Western CC) was hit by a pitch with one out, moved to third on a double by Casteneda and both runners would score when redshirt senior
Trey Vasquez (Greeley, Colo./Dodge City CC) reached on a throwing error Mines second baseman Alex Dunagan. On the play, Prewitt and Casteneda scored to give the Pack a 2-1 lead. Vasquez would eventually score the third run of the game thanks to a wild pitch from Mines starting pitcher Kevin Zapanta.
Mines took advantage of the wind again in the top of the fourth inning as Danny McDermott led off with a double to right and after two straights outs, Andrews stepped to the plate a drilled a pitch from junior hurler
Tyler Curtis (Las Vegas, Nev./Southern Idaho) deep to the wall in center that was out of the reach of senior
Noah Hennings (Draper, Utah/Southern Idaho) and by the time Hennings retrieved the ball, Andrews had scored on an inside-the-park home run to tie the game at 3-all.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Pack put a runner on base thanks to a one-out single by senior first baseman
Reggie Williams (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County), but Williams, who extended his hit streak to 21 games with that single, was left stranded at second after Prewitt grounded out to Zapanta to end the inning.
The Pack would retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth thanks to an RBI single by sophomore leftfielder
Elijah Borjas (Denver, Colo./Lakewood). Borjas' single scored Vasquez, who had reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning. Vasquez's run gave the Pack a 4-3 lead.
Mines would retie the game in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double to right off the bat of Nielsen.
The Orediggers would retake the lead in the top of the eighth inning off of Pack sophomore reliever
Jacob Petersheim (Broadway, Va./Broadway) as they plated two runs on a hit and a Pack error. Petersheim replaced Curtis after he pitched the first seven innings. In the eighth, Mines took advantage of a walk, a hit batsman, an error on a failed pickoff attempt at second and a 2-run double off the bat of Nielsen to take a 6-4 lead.
Mines added an insurance run in the ninth thanks to three hits, including a RBI single by McDermott to push out to a 7-4 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Blake Ripp, who replaced Zapanta on the mound in the bottom of the fifth, would retire the Park in order to seal his third win of the season and move his record to 3-1.
Mines finished the game with 15 hits, including a 4-for-5 day at the plate from Nielsen, while Adam Houghtaling also had four hits in five at-bats in the win. Andrews and McDermott each had two hit. The Orediggers, like the Pack, left 11 runners on base.
Curtis, who got a no-decision, tossed seven strong innings as he allowed 11 hits and four runs, while striking out seven and walking one. In a team-leading 46 innings this season, Curtis has struck out 31 and walked just seven.
Petersheim (0-2) took the loss as he pitched the final two innings and allowed four hits and three runs, while striking out two and walking one.
Ripp pitched the final 4.2 innings and allowed two hits and no runs, while striking out four and walking one. Zapanta tossed 4.1 innings and allowed five hits and four runs (all unearned), while striking out four and walking two.
The Pack stole two bases and were hit by three pitches in the game.
The teams will conclude the four game series on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
