BLOOMFIELD, N.M. (March 11, 2023) - The Colorado State University Pueblo softball team split the first of two games against Fort Lewis College, winning the series opener 10-2, before falling 3-2 in the nightcap on Saturday on a neutral field at Bloomfield HS.
On the day, CSU Pueblo hit four homeruns and were led offensively byÂ
Madelyn Huerta (Fr., Azusa, Calif.) as she went 5-for-7 at the plate with a homerun and two RBI.Â
Jill Bishop (Sr., Brighton, Colo.) had a strong day at the dish and hit two homeruns and collected five RBI in the series opener.
Seaerra Fuentes Arellano (Sr., Ewa Beach, Hawai'i) smacked her first bomb of the season for the ThunderWolves in game one.
In the opener, CSU Pueblo jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and scored the first run with aggressive base running allowed lead-off hitter
Raelynn Rogers (So., Surprise, Ariz.) to steal home.
Later in the inning, Huerta stepped in and hit a 2-run blast over the center field wall for the Pack.
In the home half, Fort Lewis scored an unearned run to get on the board.
During the third, Bishop got her first RBI of the contest with a sac fly out to give the Pack a 4-1 lead.
CSU Pueblo added another run in the fourth on the homerun by Fuentes Arellano.
In the fifth,
Caitlyn Cole (Fr., Merced, Calif.) led off the inning with a walk and she would come around to score on a steal home.
Bishop later stepped in and hit a 0-2 pitch over the wall in left field, extending the Pack's lead.
In the seventh, Bishop again came to the plate and wasted no time in crushing homerun number two on the first pitch to give the ThunderWolves a nine-run cushion.
FLC would score one run in the bottom half before Pack starting pitcher
Lucy Carney (So., Lakewood, Colo.) slammed the door on the Skyhawks, 10-2. Carney improves to 4-4 on the year.
In game two, CSU Pueblo scored a pair of unearned runs on a throwing error by the catcher in the second inning.
The Skyhawks cut the lead to 2-1 in their half of the second.
In the circle,
Jacelynn Trujillo (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) had an effective outing and gave up three runs and two earned, finishing with two strikeouts.
Trujillo and Co. carried the 2-1 lead into the fifth when FLC tied up the game on a defensive error from the Pack.
Tied at 2-2 entering the seventh, CSU Pueblo was unable to capitalize on a single in the inning before going to the bottom half.
In the last at-bat for the Skyhawks, three walks to start the inning set up for the home team to hit a walk-off single and take home a 3-2 win.
Trujillo drops to 1-6 on the year.
CSU Pueblo (7-14, 2-12 RMAC) will finish the series with another doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11 a.m. at Bloomfield HS.
