Women's Basketball Ends Season With Setback in RMAC Tournament at No. 1 Seeded Regis

DENVER, Colo. – Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball saw its 2022-23 season come to an end here Tuesday evening as the eighth-seeded ThunderWolves fell 72-57 to top-seeded Regis University in a quarterfinal round game of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament played at Regis Fieldhouse.

With the setback, the Pack concludes the season with a 14-15 overall record, while Regis improves to 23-6 overall and advances to a match-up on Friday in the semifinals on its home court against fourth-seeded Adams State, who picked up a 71-48 quarterfinal win at home over No. 5 seeded Westminster. CSU Pueblo was the defending RMAC Tournament runners-up from last season.

Tuesday's game was the second one between the two schools in the three days as Regis picked up a 66-46 win at Massari Arena in Pueblo on Saturday night to conclude the regular season. In that game, the Pack shot 33 percent from the field and were 2-for-24 (8 percent) from the 3-point line and were outrebounded, 53-27.

Flash forward to Tuesday's game, the Pack stayed in the game a majority of night against the regular-season champion Rangers by hitting eight 3-pointers and forcing 16 turnovers, which helped negate a 53-26 edge on the boards by Regis, including collecting 18 offensive rebounds that led to 14 second chance points for the home team.

Sophomore guard Landri Hudson (Aurora, Colo./University of Wyoming) paced the way offensively for the Pack as she tallied a career-high 23 points and tied for the team lead with five rebounds. In addition to Hudson, sophomore guard Daeja Johnson (Queen Creek, Ariz./Casteel) and graduate student guard Morgan Dial (Denver City, Texas/Western Texas College) each scored eight points.

Graduate student guard JaNaiya Davis (Hewitt, Texas/Midway) closed out her collegiate career with seven points to eclipse the 1,500 career point mark as she finishes her Pack career with 1,502 points, which is third most in the school history. In addition to being third in career scoring, she closes her time in Pueblo second in career field goals made (564), sixth in career free throws made (277), fifth in career free throw percentage (80.5 percent), fifth in career rebounds (781) and is the school's all-time leader in assists (525), steals (308) and games played (131).

Along with Davis and Dial, three other Pack players played their final games in Red, White and Blue – guard/forward Charisse Fairley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Fresno State), guard Amaya Lewis (Hobbs, N.M./New Mexico JC) and guard Jalen Long (Moreno Valley, Calif./Eastern Arizona College).

The two teams played even in the first quarter as the Pack jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but the Rangers, who improved to 3-1 against the Pack all-time in the RMAC Tournament, scored 14 of then next 19 points to push out to a 16-10 lead with 2:43 left in the period. But the Pack would respond as two straight treys from Long helped jump start an 8-2 run to close the quarter and tie the game at 18-all after 10 minutes of play.

In the second quarter, the Rangers outscored the Pack, 17-9 to take a 35-27 lead at the half. In the quarter, the Pack were held scoreless for nearly four minutes and during that scoreless stretch, Regis outscored the Pack, 7-0 to push its lead from 28-25 to 35-25.

The Rangers pushed its lead to as much as 12 points at 47-35 just four-plus minutes into the third quarter, but the Pack would mount another rally as two straight baskets from Johnson helped pull the Pack within 47-40 with 4:18 left in the period. The Rangers would answer back by scoring five straight points to return its lead to 12 points at 52-40 with 1:15 remaining in the period. Hudson would score on back-to-back baskets and missed a three right before the buzzer to pull the Pack within 52-44 heading into the final quarter.

Regis used a 19-7 edge on the boards and a 7-for-10 effort at the free throw to outscore the Pack, 20-13 in the final period to post the 15-point win.

Josey Ryan led four Rangers in double figures with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Erin Fry and Sam Deem added 14 points and Erin Stroberg added a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds.

For the game, the Pack shot 35 percent from the field and 26 percent from the 3-point line, while Regis shot 41 percent from the field and 26 percent from the 3-point line.

Regis also shot 25 free throws in the game as they were 19-for-25 (76 percent) at the line and the Pack were just 3-for-5 (60 percent) at the line.

The Rangers finished the night with 16 turnovers and blocked two shots, while the Pack committed just nine turnovers and did not block a shot.
