Baseball Scores Season High 12 Runs in Home Slugfest Against West Texas A&M

PUEBLO, Colo. - The Colorado State Pueblo baseball team opened Sunday's doubleheader here at Rawlings Field by falling 18-12 in a high scoring slugfest against West Texas A&M.

With the setback, the ThunderWolves fall to 1-8 on the season, while West Texas A&M improves to 9-5 on the season.

The two teams combined for 30 runs and 31 hits in the slugfest that lasted a little over three-and-half hours. The game also featured a combined 17 walks, seven hit batsmen and 24 runners left on base. The 12 runs and 12 hits by the Pack were season highs.

CSU Pueblo had 12 hits and drew eight walks in the loss. Senior first baseman Reggie Williams (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) paced the Pack with a 4-for-6 effort at the plate to raise his season batting average to .438 on the year. Every other position starter except for senior centerfielder Noah Hennings (Draper, Utah/Southern Idaho) had a hit for the Pack.

In addition to Williams, sophomore leftfielder Elijah Borjas (Denver, Colo./Lakewood), junior catcher Brady Prewitt (Raytown, Mo./Iowa Western CC) and sophomore second baseman Kolton Miller (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) each had 2 RBI each in the game.

West Texas struck first in the top of the first inning as they loaded the bases with a walk and two singles off of junior pitcher Tyler Curtis (Las Vegas, Nev./Southern Idaho). Curtis would then induce a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Will Fuenning that brought in the first run and then got a flyout to end the inning.

CSU Pueblo would respond in the bottom of the first as they used three hits, including an RBI single by redshirt senior shortstop Trey Vasquez (Greeley, Colo./Dodge City CC) and a 2-run double by Borjas to give the Pack a 3-1 lead.

The Buffaloes would tie the game in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Patrick Donovan and an RBI double by Eddy Savoie off of Curtis.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Pack retook the lead as they scored six runs on four hits. The big hits in the inning were a 2-run single by Prewitt, a 2-run double by Miller and an RBI double to center by Williams. Williams' double gave the Pack a 9-3 lead.

The Buffaloes would get three of those run back in the top of the fourth inning on a 3-run homer over the fence in center by Will Fuenning off of Curtis. Fuenning's homer made the score 9-6.

West Texas would add five more runs to its tally in the sixth to retake the lead at 11-9. Four of the runs were scored on 2-run singles by Evan Leibl and Mike Manetta and the other run scored on a wild pitch by redshirt junior pitcher Edwing Corrales (Delicias, Mexico/Otero JC), who was the fourth Pack pitcher of the game.

In the seventh, Savoie gave the Buffaloes a 13-9 lead on his 2-run single up the middle off of Corrales.

The Pack would strike back in the bottom of the seventh off of Gavin Pringle as Prewitt walked with one out, sophomore rightfielder Tyson Pallett (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood) collected his first hit of the season on a single to right center and then junior third baseman Joseph Quintana (Golden, Colo./Erskine) followed with an RBI single through the right side that chased Pringle from the game and after Miller was put out on an infield fly, Williams delivered an RBI single to right off of Douglas Rojas to bring the Pack within two runs at 13-11.

WTAMU added five runs in the top of the eighth with three of those runs coming on a 3-run homer that hit the scoreboard in right center off the bat of Adam Becker to give the Buffs a 16-11 lead. The homer by Becker was his fifth of the season. The other two runs came in later in the frame on a fielder's choice grounder by Savoie and a pinch hit RBI single by Cameron Loy. Both of those later runs in the inning came off of freshman Luke Ruby (Fort Collins, Colo./Resurrection Christian), who was making his collegiate debut on the mound for the Pack. Ruby was the sixth pitcher of the game for the Pack.

The Pack used back-to-back doubles from redshirt junior pinch hitter Cole Knightley (Solvang, Calif./Santa Ynez) and Williams brought home a run to pull within 18-12. WTAMU reliever Tyler Cornett would prevent further damage as he struck out junior designated hitter Edmund King (Imperial Beach, Calif./Southwestern) to end the game.

Becker and Ryan Johnson each had four hits for the Buffs, while Savoie, Leibl and Fuenning each had two hits. Savoie had 4 RBI, while Becker and Fuenning each had 3 RBI in the win.

Curtis pitched 3.1 innings and allowed nine hits and six runs (5 earned runs), while walking two and striking out two in his third start of the season.

Graduate student Ruben Portillo (Thornton, Colo./Eastern Arizona CC), who the third of six pitchers for the Pack, took the loss for the Pack as he pitched 0.2 innings and allowed three hits and four runs, while walking one to suffer the loss.

Pringle (4-0) earned the win in relief as he tossed 3.2 innings and allowed two hits and two runs, while walking three and striking two.
