Women's Basketball Closes Out Regular Season Road Schedule With Setback to Colorado Mesa

Pack Sits Eighth in RMAC Standings Heading Into Final Week of League Play

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Colorado State University closed out the road portion of its 2022-23 regular season schedule here Saturday evening with xx-xx setback to Colorado Mesa in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at Brownson Arena.

With the setback, the ThunderWolves snap their three-game winning streak and moves its record to 13-13 overall and 10-10 in the RMAC, while Mesa improved to 12-14 overall and 11-9 in the league. The loss dropped the Pack to eighth place in the league standings with two games left in the regular season. The top eight teams at the end of the regular season advance to the 2023 RMAC Tournament.

One night after shooting 50 percent from the field and a season-high 61 percent from the 3-point line in earning a come-from-behind 72-66 win at Westminster, the Pack offense struggled shooting the basketball as they finished the game shooting 31 percent from the field and were 4-for-19 (21 percent) from the 3-point line.

Meanwhile, Mesa, who won its fifth straight game, shot 50 percent from the field and 44 percent from the 3-point line. The Mavericks also held a 45-16 advantage on the boards, including collecting 14 offensive boards that led to a 14-2 edge in second chance points.

The 43 points was the second lowest point total of the season for the Pack as they scored 42 points in a 58-42 loss at MSU Denver on Jan. 7.

Graduate student guard JaNaiya Davis (Hewitt, Texas/Midway) led the way offensively for the Pack with 13 points and she had five of CSU Pueblo's 16 rebounds. With her 13 points, she pushed her career scoring total to 1,475 points, which is fifth-most in program history.

In addition to Davis, senior guard Amaya Lewis (Hobbs, N.M./New Mexico JC) added nine points off the bench, while sophomore guard Daeja Johnson (Queen Creek, Ariz./Casteel) tallied eight points.

The Mavs held the Pack's season scoring leader, graduate student guard/forward Charisse Fairley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Fresno State) scoreless as she was 0-for-6 from the field and 0-for-1 from long distance.

Colorado Mesa, who split the season series with the Pack as CSU Pueblo earned a 67-66 win in Pueblo on Dec. 30, led 16-5 just a litle over six minutes into the contest and after the Pack scored four of the next six points to pull within 18-10 with 2:43 left in the first quarter.

The Mavs, though, would close the first quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 25-10 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

In the opening quarter, the Pack made just three of its first 15 shots and were outrebounded, 16-5 by the Mavericks.

Lewis and Davis scored the first four points of the second quarter for the Pack to drop Mesa's lead to 25-14, but the Mavs would respond with a 16-5 run to turn an 11-point game into a 22-point game at 41-19. The Pack would score the final three points of the second quarter to trial 41-22 at the half.

Both teams played even in the third quarter as each team scored 13 points to help Mesa hold a 54-35 lead heading into the final period.

The Pack will close the 2022-23 regular season next weekend (Feb. 24-25) at Massari Arena as they host UCCS and Regis in back-to-back RMAC contests beginning at 5:30 p.m. each day.
