PUEBLO, Colo. (February 11, 2022) - Colorado State University Pueblo softball opened the home portion of its schedule with a doubleheader split against Western New Mexico, falling 5-4 (8 inn.) in the first game and came away with a 2-0 shutout win in the nightcap at Rawlings Sports Complex.
In her home debut, Freshman
Madelyn Huerta (Azusa, Calif.) finished with three hits to lead the offense including a double, a run and an RBI in two games.
Ashley Tosh (So., Fremont, Calif.) tacked on a pair of hits in the twin bill and
Jill Bishop (Sr., Brighton, Colo.) smacked a 2-run double to account for the only runs in the Pack's win in game two.
In the first game, WNMU scored the first run of the game in the third and the Pack responded in their half, and scored two runs on a Huerta infield single and a passed ball against the Mustangs defense.
The Mustangs regained the lead in the top of the fifth and CSU Pueblo answered back in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI-triple by
Seaerra Fuentes Arellano (Sr., Ewa Beach, Hawai'i). She would later come around to score on a RBI-bunt single off the bat of
Raelynn Rogers (So., Surprise, Ariz.).
The Pack carried a 4-3 lead into the seventh when Western NM capitalized on a leadoff walk that would come around to score, tying the game at four apiece.
The ThunderWolves went down in order in the seventh to go into extra innings.
In their first chance in extras, a runner was placed on second base to start the frame and two quick outs resulted in the runner reaching third base. That runner scored during the next at-bat, a double that went rolled to the wall, giving WNMU a one-run lead.
In the home half of the eighth inning, the ThunderWolves were retired in order with three pop outs on the infield.
In the circle,
Jacelynn Trujillo (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) started the game and came back on in relief, finishing with 6.1 innings pitched and gave up four runs, three earned and allowed seven free passes to go with seven strikeouts. In relief,
Marika Spector (Jr., Wimberley, Tex.) tossed 1.2 innings and gave up one run and issued three walks.
During game two, a solid pitching performance put out by
Lucy Carney (So., Lakewood, Colo.) was key in the ThunderWolves 2-0 win.
Carney went the distance and in the shutout, allowed three hits and totaled four strikeouts and three walks to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
The only runs of the game came in the third on the two-run 2B from Bishop.
CSU Pueblo (4-2) will finish its nonconference schedule with one more game against Western NM on Sunday starting at 11 a.m. at Rawlings Sports Complex.
