WICHITA FALLS, Tex. (December 1, 2023) - For a second straight season, No. 16 Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer earned the right to play in the NCAA South Central Regional Final after handing No. 2 Midwestern State its first loss of the season on Friday, beating the Mustangs 1-0 on their own field at Stang Park.
With the win, 4-seed CSU Pueblo advance to the Regional Final and will take on 2-seed and No. 4Â Cal State LA on Sunday at 2 p.m. (MT) at Stang Park in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Ricardo Schroeder Jr. (Sr., Parana, Brazil) scored his fifth goal of the season during the 78th minute off a set-piece.
Caio Oliveira (Sr., Espigao d'Oeste, Brazil) took the free kick from the left side and served a ball in and wide of the net and
Shjon Andrews (Sr., Longmont, Colo.) was able to keep the ball in play and Schroeder Jr. hit a header that landed inside the right post.
In the match, CSU Pueblo's defense was the difference and held a Mustang squad that scored 62 goals this season to just three shots in the clean sheet performance.
Ignatius DeMark (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.) and
Reggie Nicolas (Sr., Palm Bay, Fla.) both recorded two shots and eight other Pack players tallied one shot.
The Pack stood with the game plan of pressuring the ball and held the Mustangs' Regional Player of the Year Mere Escobar to only one shot in the match.
At the net, Pack freshman
Ryan Nun (Broomfield, Colo.) faced three shots and made one save for the Pack.
Nun was active for the ThunderWolves and stepped off the line on different occasions to help not allow Midwestern State an quality chance at the net.
The ThunderWolves totaled four corners and held the Mustangs to three in the game.
Up next, CSU Pueblo (17-4-2) will look to secure a spot in the Final Four for a second time in program history on Sunday when they take on the Golden Eagles for the second time in three seasons. In the Fall 2021 season, the ThunderWolves fell 2-1 to Cal State LA in a NCAA Second Round match in Los Angeles.
