No. 16 CSU Pueblo advances to Final Four after PK win over No. 4 Cal State LA

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (December 3, 2023) - No. 16 Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer team advanced to the NCAA Final Four for a second consecutive season after beating No. 4 Cal State LA 4-3 on penalty kicks on Sunday at Stang Park.

Battling to a 3-3 draw through regulation and two overtime periods, the ThunderWolves came from behind on three different occasions and scored three goals against the Golden Eagles who had allowed only eight goals all season.

For the Pack, Jack Pascoe (Sr., Barry, Wales), Ignatius DeMark (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.) and Giancarlo Pretto (Jr., Lajeado Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil) all scored.

In the penalty kicks, Gabriel Campora (Sr., Saltillo, Mexico), Kenshin Uneo (Sr., Hyogo, Japan), Noe Ortiz Pena (Sr., Aurora, Colo.) and Aden O'Hara (Jr., Melbourne, Fla.) were all successful in their attempts.

In the match, CSU Pueblo recorded ten shots and had five land on frame. The ThunderWolves earned four corners.

Campora and Shjon Andrews (Sr., Longmont, Colo.) both finished with two shots.

CSULA scored the first goal of the match in the 17th minute and the ThunderWolves responded five minutes later with a header goal scored from Pascoe.

At the break, the Golden Eagles were ahead in shots 5-3.

In the second half, CSULA went ahead in the 58th minute and the goal was matched ten minutes by the ThunderWolves when Caio Oliveira (Sr., Espigao d'Oeste, Brazil) took a corner kick and was able to get the ball sent wide and DeMark was able to get a header on the ball, tying the game at two apiece.

The teams continued to battle over the final thirty minutes of the second half and the score went unchanged, sending the match to two 10-minute overtime periods.

In extra time, CSULA went ahead after scoring a goal at the 105th minute.

With 1:13 left in the second overtime, CSU Pueblo scored the equalizer when Pretto was able to muscle his way through the defense and get a header on the ball that went into the right side of the net.

At the net, Ryan Nun (Fr., Broomfield, Colo.) made two saves against 14 shots from CSULA.

CSU Pueblo (17-4-3) will head to Matthews, North Carolina this week and will take on No. 5 Florida Tech on Thursday in a National Semifinal Match. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. (MT). On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 Franklin Pierce will play Lewis.
