CSU Pueblo wins overtime thriller 2-1 against Chico State; advance in NCAA Tournament

PUEBLO, Colo. (November 18, 2023) - The Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer team are streaking at the right time of the season and won its fifth match in a row after a 2-1 overtime victory against Chico State on Saturday at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.

The ThunderWolves, the 4-seed in the NCAA South Central Region faced the Wildcats, the No. 5 seed from Chico State for the first time in program history.

Gabriel Campora (Sr., Saltillo, Mexico) scored his 18th goal of the season, most in program history in a single season and Jack Pascoe (Sr., Barry, Wales, England) found the back of the net for his first goal of the year in the victory.

With the goal, Campora now sits at 34 goals scored in two seasons at CSU Pueblo placing him third all-time in goals scored.

In front of a packed house at Gonzales Stadium, the ThunderWolves dominated offensively and outshot the Wildcats 18-7, led by Caio Oliveira (Sr., Espigao d'Oeste, Brazil) with five shots.

Through the first half, CSU Pueblo fired six shots and earned one corner and took a scoreless match into the break.

CSCU managed two shots and one corner in the first half.

Starting the second half, CSU Pueblo continued to dominate the ball and was the first to each loose ball before the visiting Wildcats earned one of two corners in the period with just over thirty minutes left on the clock and a perfectly served in ball high above the defense allowed for Noah Ross to get a header on the ball and hit the inside of the left post for the 1-0 lead.

After giving up the go-ahead goal, the ThunderWolves picked up their intensity and would fire three shots over the next ten minutes of play and was called offside one time in that span to put the Wildcats on their heels.

With under ten minutes left in regulation, CSU Pueblo held possession on the near side and worked the ball down the far sideline before Will Boyle (So., Fort Collins, Colo.) hit a center cross pass high enough for Campora to get a header on the ball that landed inside the right post and past the reach of the Wildcat goalkeeper, tying the game at 1-1 with just over eight minutes in the second half.

After tying the match, both teams managed one more shot each before the horn sounded to send the match into extra time.

In the first overtime, CSU Pueblo controlled the ball and fired three shots including one landing on goal that was saved by Wildcat goalkeeper Emanuel Padilla.

Chico State made one shot in the final seconds that was saved by Pack goalkeeper Ryan Nun (Fr., Broomfield, Colo.).

Entering the final overtime, the ThunderWolves wasted little time and gained possession on a turnover near midfield and Kenshin Uneo (Sr., Hyogo, Japan) hit a smooth groundball pass to Pascoe who was standing near the top of the box and Pascoe made one turn and fired a shot that went sailed just under the crossbar for the go-ahead goal and over eight minutes left in the second overtime.

Holding the one goal advantage, CSU Pueblo's defense buckled down and did not allow another shot from the Wildcats.

Nun finished his first NCAA Tournament game and made two saves against seven shots and three landing on frame.

Next up, CSU Pueblo (16-4-2) will wait and see where they will travel to next for the Third Round in two weeks.
