RAPID CITY, S.D. – The No. 5 seeded Colorado State University Pueblo volleyball saw its 2023 season end here Tuesday evening as the ThunderWolves dropped a hard-fought five-set match to No. 4 seeded South Dakota Mines (23-25, 25-13, 30-32, 25-15, 12-15) in the quarterfinal round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament held at the King Center.
With the setback, the Pack closes its season with a 13-14 overall record, while South Dakota Mines improves to 18-9 and advances to a Friday semifinal tournament match at No. 1 seeded and seventh-ranked MSU Denver.
The Pack, who were making their fifth straight appearance in the RMAC Tournament, fell to 7-12 all-time in the tournament and dropped its third straight match to the Hardrockers, all of which were played in Rapid City.

"Our team played pretty well tonight. Outside of an error-filled first set I was pleased with how we competed. The offense was efficient, and we blocked well. But as it usually does in these tight matches it came down to a few little moments and situations where we missed an opportunity or South Dakota Mines made a great play. Credit to them for finding a way to make the plays when it mattered," CSU Pueblo head coach
Austin Albers said. "I'm proud of the way that this team stuck together and continued to play hard after a rocky start to the season. We got better as the year went along and found ways to compete at a high level at times. But losing stings, we feel like we are a better team than our record showed. But it's only failure if we choose not to learn from it."
The Pack, which hit .304 in the match, was outhit, .619 to .250 in the fifth and final set that sealed South Dakota Mines' victory. The Hardrockers' 18 wins this season are the most in a season since winning 27 matches in 2011.
CSU Pueblo's offense was paced by the play of redshirt sophomore
Payton Van Veen (Springfield, Mo./Washburn University) as the 2022 AVCA Honorable Mention All-American tallied 19 kills, eight digs, a career-high tying eight blocks and hit .395. In addition to Van Veen, sophomore outside hitter

The fourth Pack that recorded double-digit kills was sophomore opposite side hitter

The Pack held a 13-3 edge in blocks in the match as redshirt sophomore middle blocker
Golden Finch (Albuquerque, N.M./Cal State Bakersfield) tied a single-match school record 11 blocks. The 11 blocks tied the record set by Lindsay Black against Angelo State in 2008.
Senior setter
