PUEBLO, Colo. (October 6, 2023) - The Colorado State University Pueblo women's soccer team scored three goals in the second half en route to its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win of the season after defeating Western Colorado 3-0 on Friday at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
Cortney Cowles (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.),
Carlia Johnson (Jr., The Valley, Anguilla) and
Katie Bean (R-Jr., Bothell, Wash.) all scored for the Pack.
CSU Pueblo finished ahead 15-3 in shots in the game and the ThunderWolves earned two corners.
In the first half, the teams battled in a scoreless affair with the Pack the more aggressive team offensively, firing off eight shots in the period.
During the 47th minute, the ThunderWolves held possession and swung the ball around the pitch to the far side and the ball went to the foot of
Madi Reardon (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) who flicked the ball inside the box to Cowles who was able to get the first touch on the ball and toe it past the Western goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, CSU Pueblo again found possession in Mountaineers territory and Cowles drove the ball down the nearside and went 1v1 with the defender and she nutmegged the opponent and centered a pass in to Johnson who was waiting for the one-timer, scoring her first goal as a member of the Pack.
After a plethora of substitutions, Bean came on to the pitch and during the 70th minute and following a Western goal kick, she was able to intercept the ball outside the box and drive past the keeper and hit inside the lower left of the net to extend the Pack's lead to 3-0.
Over the final 15 minutes, the ThunderWolves held possession and kept the ball away from the Mountaineers and maintain the shutout.
Pack goalkeeper
Nicole Genis (Sr., San Jose, Costa Rica) stood tall for most of the match and made one save against three shots from WCU.
CSU Pueblo (3-2-5, 1-1-3 RMAC) next goes on the road for a pair of games Thursday at Regis and Sunday at Black Hills State.
