LAKEWOOD, Colo. (October 6, 2023) - The No. 8 Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer team picked up a big road win 1-0 over Colorado Christian to stay unbeaten in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play after Pack senior
Gabriel Campora (Saltillo, Mexico) scored on a penalty kick with 15 seconds left in regulation to come away with the victory on the road at Trailblazer Stadium.
"Incredible game today," said Pack Head Coach
Oliver Twelvetrees. "CCU is without a doubt the hardest place in the conference to come and get a result. Fair play to CCU Head Coach Brad. He has done an amazing job with the program."
In the match, CSU Pueblo outshot the Cougars 12-6 led by
Alon Firdman (So., Barcelona, Spain) who finished with three shots including two landing on goal.
Through the first half, the ThunderWolves and Cougars battled to a scoreless affair with the Pack making three shots against five by CCU in the period. All three of the shots landed on goal for the Pack. Both teams earned one corner in the first half.
CSU Pueblo did not record their first shot until the 36th minute when
Ricardo Schroeder Jr. (Sr., Parana, Brazil) fired a shot centered with the net that landed right in the lap of the CCU goalkeeper.
The teams carried the scoreless game into intermission.
Starting the second half, CSU Pueblo picked up the intensity and held possession on the offensive side of the pitch for majority of the period.
The ThunderWolves' first good look at the net came in the 70th minute when
Jake Feiner (Gr., Erie, Colo.) sent a shot towards the net, causing the CCU goalie to slide to his left for the save.
In a physical game throughout, the teams combined for 36 total fouls and none was bigger than with less than a minute left in regulation, the ThunderWolves drove the ball inside the box and a foul against CCU on the Pack's
Giancarlo Pretto (Jr., Lajeado Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil) resulted in a penalty kick awarded to the ThunderWolves.
Twelvetrees added, "In the second half we were immense and just kept going, never gave up and in the end we got our reward. Big Giancarlo was phenomenal and it was fitting that he won the penalty to win the game."
CSU Pueblo continued to battled and was awarded the PK with fifteen seconds showing on the clock and Campora did what he does best and stepped in to score on his third penalty kick goal of the season. Campora now has 13 goals on the season which is most in the RMAC and second highest total in Division II.
Pack goalkeeper
Tristan Whitlock (So., Lincoln, Neb.) played exceptionally well and made one save against six shots from CCU and earned another clean sheet between the posts.
"A lot of the squad stepped up today and played their part in changing momentum of the game in the second half," said Twelvetrees. "It was a real team effort to get thru 4 really hard games in eight days but we have done it with 12 points and I am so very proud of our team's mentality. We keep fighting for each other."
CSU Pueblo (10-1-1, 4-0 RMAC) will return to the pitch on Thursday and travel to Alamosa for a RMAC match against Adams State starting at 3 p.m. at ASU Soccer Field.
