No. 8 ThunderWolves race past Mountain Lions

PUEBLO, Colo. (October 4, 2023) - The No. 8 ranked Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer team pushed its home win streak to 15 games and remained perfect in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play following a 2-1 win over University of Colorado Colorado Springs.

Reigning-RMAC Offensive Player of the Week and Pack senior striker Gabriel Campora (Saltillo, Mexico) scored both goals for the ThunderWolves in the first half and strong play by the defense helped the Pack in a physical contest played at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.

CSU Pueblo Head Coach Oliver Twelvetrees praised his team for their play throughout the match. "The boys battled hard tonight against a very tough and talented team. We're happy to get the positive result and move forward. Gabo's first goal was special and he led the line very well tonight."

In the match, CSU Pueblo outshot UCCS 11-4 and as a result of the physical play, 26 fouls combined were called in the match.

Campora scored the first goal during the 11th minute after the CSU Pueblo defense cleared the ball ahead to midfield and Caio Oliveira (Sr., Espigao d'Oeste, Brazil) flicked the ball ahead to Campora who went 1v1 with the defender and used an explosive touch to race past the defense, striking the lower right corner of the net.

In the 26th minute, CSU Pueblo was awarded a penalty kick and Campora stepped in, cool, calm and collected before hitting the net low and inside the right post for the 2-nil lead.

Through the first half, the Pack registered six shots against two by UCCS. The ThunderWolves earned three corners in the first period.

In the second half, UCCS got on the board in the 48th minute after a breakdown at midfield allowed the Mountain Lions to drive down field and place one in the back of the net.

After the goal, the ThunderWolves buckled down and turned up the intensity to match the energy put forth by the visiting team.

With about ten minutes left in the match, CSU Pueblo was handed a second yellow card to the same player, resulting in the Pack having to play one man down for the rest of regulation.

Pack goalkeeper Tristan Whitlock (So., Lincoln, Neb.) was tested throughout the night including over the final five minutes and made several monumental saves at the to keep the Mountain Lions from scoring the equalizer.

Whitlock finished with one save and one goal allowed in full minutes of action.

CSU Pueblo (9-1-1, 3-0 RMAC) will go back on the road for its next match and play Friday at Colorado Christian starting at 1 p.m. in Lakewood.
